Job Summary:

The Marine Science Program at Hawaii Pacific University (HPU) invites applications for a fulltime faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning Fall 2025. We seek highly motivated enthusiastic and collaborative candidates who will thrive in the role of the teacherscholar where faculty are expected to be excellent teachers and mentors produce scholarship in their field of interest and provide service to the institution. Successful candidates will be committed to innovative inclusive and experiential approaches to undergraduate and graduate (Masters) education and will establish and maintain a studentcentered externallyfunded and communityinformed research program. The preferred candidate will have broad training in marine science with the capacity to teach one or more of chemical physical or geological oceanography at the graduate level general oceanography for undergraduate majors and a course of the candidates choosing that could fulfill a statistical or quantitative elective requirement for graduate students. Potential research areas include but are not limited to multidisciplinary aspects of marine science such as biophysical interactions biogeochemistry of coral reefs coastal processes or climate change. The preferred candidate will also have a vision for how their research and teaching could utilize HPUs unique resources such as the proximity to nearshore coral reefs and tropical oligotrophic marine environments HPUs 42foot motorized catamaran in Kaneohe Bay and/or HPUs AAUS scientific diving program to provide diverse opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students with varied interests.

About the Department

HPUs Department of Marine Science offers three bachelors degrees (BS Marine Biology BS Oceanography and BA Marine Affairs) and a Master of Science in Marine Science degree with thesisbased and applied (internshipbased) tracks. Marine Science program operations are primarily based at the Makapuu campus in Waimanalo Oahu which also hosts the Oceanic Institute (an aquaculture research and technology development center) and the Center for Marine Debris Research. Some teaching responsibilities may also take place at HPUs campus in downtown Honolulu including teaching labs in our brandnew science building. Our programs resources also include a 42ft motorized catamaran which operates in Kaneohe Bay and an AAUScertified scientific diving program. Faculty in Marine Science typically teach 3 4 lecture or laboratory courses per semester with the opportunity to reduce this teaching load through the procurement of extramural research funding mentoring student research or specific service to the department or college (e.g. department chair). Regular faculty are ninemonth exempt employees paid over twelve months.

About the College

The College of Natural and Computational Sciences is home to the Department of Computer Science and Engineering the Department of Mathematics the Department of Natural Science and the Department of Marine Science. The Marine Science Department is the largest of the college hosting nearly 40 45 of the majors in the college (approximately 300 undergraduates majoring in Marine Biology Oceanography or Marine Affairs and 30 40 Masters students in the thesis and applied tracks).

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • PhD in Marine Science Oceanography or a related field
  • Universitylevel experience teaching marine science or related courses
  • Research experience and scholarship record in multidisciplinary aspects of marine science
  • Experience mentoring student research
Desired Qualifications:
  • Two years of experience as the instructor of record for marine science or oceanography courses at the university level
  • Experience developing marine science curricula
  • Experience mentoring graduate and undergraduate research
  • Experience promoting diversity and inclusivity in higher education and evidence of dedication to the wellbeing and advancement of students
  • Postdoctoral research experience
  • Track record of successfully securing extramural funding
  • Track record of publications in the peerreviewed literature
  • Ability to maintain active research program involving undergraduate and graduate students
Other Qualifications:
  • Report to work obligations to support the department may require work during HPUs winter break if necessary.
  • Must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with the Protection of Minors policy.
  • This position may also require driving responsibility for an HPU vehicle. Due to driving responsibilities you must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with HPUs Vehicle Driving policy.
  • Able to teach classes scheduled during days and evenings.
  • Able to teach classes at multiple locations on Oahu.

Key Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:

1.Teaching 60
  • Teach 24 credits of lecture and laboratory courses a year 4 conventional courses per semester). The default modality for these courses is inperson.
  • Develop and teach undergraduate or graduate courses to support the Marine Science program.
  • Plan and develop courses in conjunction with the program chair that meet the requirements of the program establish appropriate student learning outcomes and provide appropriate class activities throughout the semester.
  • Plan and deliver individual classes that conform to the syllabus and to other University requirements.
  • Demonstrate a command of the discipline and skill in presenting it effectively in the context of an integrated education.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records on student participation and performance use appropriate measures and evaluate student performance on the basis of established student learning outcomes provide timely feedback to students and assign grades that are an accurate and fair evaluation of student work.
  • Submit grades and any other required documentation in a timely manner.
  • Post and maintain regular office hours at times reasonably convenient to students. Serve as an advisor to students and provide informed advice.
  • Meet deadlines and follow directions of the program/department chair associate dean or dean of the college.
  • Evaluate the teaching of colleagues through the process of peer review.
2.Scholarship and Professional Development 20
  • Conduct research projects in marine science or a closely related field involving students.
  • Apply for obtain and manage internal and external research funding.
  • Disseminate research findings through peerreviewed publications conference presentations and invited seminars.
  • Contribute to institutional and infrastructure grant writing.

3. University Service 15
  • Attend orientation programs and Faculty Assembly meetings; fulfill academic duties including academic advising for undergraduate and/or graduate students
  • Participate in committees; course program and curriculum area coordination; curricular development and textbook selection; instructional workshops and activities within relevant curricular areas; policy and program review; or other learning assessments.
  • Serve as a representative on school or college level and university level committees of the Faculty Assembly as well as on other task forces and committees that assist the chair of the Faculty Assembly and/or the deans in the formation of academic policies and related matters.
  • Assist with cocurricular activities including organization of participation in or presentation of faculty forums or workshops; advising and sponsorship of clubs and societies; participation in organization of providing guidance and assistance to extracurricular or cocurricular university events such as banquets the literary magazine the athletic program intercultural events theatrical productions guest speaker forums or graduation ceremonies.
  • Participate in recruiting and retention activities.
  • Meet department and collegespecific expectations for university service.
4. Performs other related duties as assigned 5
  • Actively participates as an effective member of the team by completing assigned duties accepting additional assignments or reassignments.
