JOB TITLE:18 Special Education Teacher


REPORTS TO: Special Education Transition / 18 Program Coordinator


WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Exempt


PAY GRADE: Teacher Salary Scale

PRIMARY PURPOSE:


The position for the 18 Special Education Teacher is designed for the education who is
committed to providing supports and services for young adults challenged with low incidence
disabilities and are ready to learn and strengthen their skills to function independently in a living
and working environment. The 18 Teacher is responsible for providing a comprehensive
program of vocation and life skills for students on the school campus and in the community
settings. The work of the 18 Special Education Teacher is guided by the students Individual
Education Plan Transition Plan districts curriculum for meeting the needs of this population
federal state guidelines per district policy and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:


Required:

  • Bachelors degree from accredited college or university
  • CPR and medication training
  • Valid Texas commercial drivers license (Class B)
  • Ability to acquire CDL

Preferred:

  • At least two years of teaching experience
  • Previous experience and/or knowledge of vocational instruction
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate in General Education content areas
  • Valid Texas ESL teaching certificate

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area
  • General knowledge of curriculum instruction and vocational skills and skills to enhance student independence
  • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
  • Strong organizational communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to collaborate with employers to secure training sites
  • Strong technology skills including technology integration
  • Knowledge of Admission Review and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and
  • Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation

MAJOR REPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Develops and implements instructional plans to assist students in independent living community access and vocational skills.
  • Serves as the students Case Manager including responsibility for:
  • Coordinates and documents the Admission Review and Dismissal/Individual
  • Educational Plan Committee for each student.
  • Ensures that students have appropriately written Standards Based Individualized
  • Education Programs (SBIEP)
  • Ensures that the IEP is being implemented with fidelity in all school settings
  • Evaluates and monitors individual student progress based on academic and behavioral data collection.
  • Participates in placement decisions based on educational social and behavioral data presented to the committee.
  • Maintains documentation of implementation of services in accordance with the students Individual Educational Plans.
  • Develops and implements instructional materials.
  • Be knowledgeable about Department of Labor Regulations concerning community based vocational education supported employment and competitive employment
  • Train students to independently lead portions of their ARD/IEP meetings
  • Market program in community to obtain employment and training opportunities for students with disabilities
  • Maintains uptodate records on student progress.
  • Contacts parents on student progress.
  • Maintains classroom areas and equipment to facilitate and/or enhance learning.
  • Organizes transports and supervises students on communitybased internships training sites and community trips.
  • Utilizes therapeutic holding when necessary.
  • Assists with the implementation of programs developed by related services personnel.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of student and parent information
  • Develops schedule for instructional aide.
  • Maintain flexible working relationship and provide support to the instructional aide.
  • Maintain bus license CPR and medication training.
  • Takes part in an initial series of Life Skills training sessions and subsequent training as directed by special education supervisor.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following
physical demands: physical mobility standing prolonged sitting some lifting carrying
pushing and/or pulling reaching/repetitive hand motions and the ability to work with frequent
interruptions. May be required to lift or position students with physical disabilities; control
behavior through physical restraint; and assist nonambulatory students. Mental demands:
Ability to maintain emotional control under stress; ability to solve problems and deal with a
variety of situations; ability to interpret a variety of data ability to be effective in both oral and
written communication. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Exposure to biological hazards.
