Job Description
FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE:
The purpose of this position is to promote a school environment that is safe and healthy for all students promote learning and advocate for positive student health related concerns by identifying health accommodations implementing care plans proving nursing services and training school staff.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work collaboratively with the schoolbased staff parent/guardians and healthcare professionals of each student for a holistic approach to student health.
- Act as a health information resource to instructional staff and administrators.
- Maintain student case management data; tracking student progress toward established goals and services rendered. Report data to District supervisor(s).
- Followup after a students medical/mental health visits as needed.
- Assist with crisis intervention and mental health emergencies.
- Initiate care plans for all students with ongoing health concerns.
- Participate as a member of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) and 504 teams.
- Maintain a log of all students receiving medications administered by school staff and those receiving skilled procedures.
- Review medical orders for student procedures and medications.
- Assign and delegate nursing tasks to unlicensed assistive personnel when appropriate; assess and monitor unlicensed assistive personnel frequently to ensure safe and appropriate care.
- Provide staff development and training in assigned area of responsibility.
- Maintain confidentiality for health demographic and educational information.
- Maintain records for students following vision and hearing screenings referrals and reevaluations.
- Assist and carry out tasks as needed to fulfill statemandated student health requirements e.g. NC Health Assessment and required immunizations for school entry
- Conduct home visits when necessary for health concerns.
- Attend inservice trainings to maintain CPR certification NCBON licensure and National School Nurse continuing education requirements/certifications
- Complete safety training annually
- Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Working knowledge of public health problems and procedures for treatment in coordination with other health and social service agencies. Ability to triage situations/work as needed.
- Working knowledge of Federal State and Local laws and regulations affecting the delivery of school health services ensuring compliance with scope of school nursing practice.
- Ability to identify abnormal growth and development and symptoms of disease.
- Ability to coordinate and facilitate services between the school local health agency and other community resources.
- Ability to develop and maintain health records on students.
- Considerable knowledge of medical disorders and treatment. Implementing case management of student chronic health conditions as needed.
- Considerable knowledge of child growth & development and psychosocial issues that influence schoolaged children.
- Skill in Microsoft Office including Word Excel PowerPoint Outlook Teams Meeting as well as Google Drive.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum: Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing and two years of nursing experience.
- Desirable: Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing and two years experience with focus in pediatric and/or public health nursing.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:
- Current NC Registered Nurse License
- National School Nurse Certification or must obtain within three years from the date of hire.
