Job Description

Description: The HPS Extended School Year (ESY) Program is for students in grades PK 12 who qualify for extended year services per their IEPs. The goal of the program is to prevent regression of learned and/or progressing skills during the Summer months.

Locations for this summer are: Donahue School (Preschool K2 ABL/RISE) Kelly School 35 ABL/RISE) Morgan 12 35 Sullivan School 68 ABL TIP SHINE) Jericho (Inclusion) or Transitions Academy depending on students IEP needs district needs and/or grade level. The HPS ESY Program runs from Monday 7/7/25Thursday 8/7/24 from 8:45 am1:15 pm. There will be a required staff orientation day on Thursday 6/26/25 with an optional additional prep on Friday 6/27/25 from 9:00 am1:00 pm.

*Hiring will be staggered throughout the Spring based on student enrollment*

The primary function of the ESY Special Education Paraprofessional is to assist in the implementation of ESY related IEP goals objectives and accommodations for students who participate in ESY services per IEPs. ESY paraprofessionals work under the direction of the classroom teacher and IEP service providers to support students throughout their school day ensuring a safe and productive learning environment. The ESY Excelsior Paraprofessional answers directly to the ESY Teacher and the ESY Site Supervisor. All ESY staff will be required to work inperson for all summer 2024 programming.

Responsibilities:

  • Participates in Staff Orientation Day on Thursday 6/26/25 with option for additional prep on Friday 6/27/25.
  • Assists in setting up classroom environment and materials conducive to student and IEP needs.
  • Assesis in the creation of visual supports and other materials to ensure an effective learning environment
  • Implements lesson plans BSPs and other strategies as directed by ESY classroom teacher and other IEP service providers
  • Supervises safe and efficient arrival and departure of ESY transportation
  • Supervises student safety throughout the school day and engages in positive reinforcement strategies to ensure a safe and productive learning environment
  • Maintains data collection as directed by ESY classroom teacher and other IEP service providers
  • Models age appropriate social skills and facilitates effective social skills interactions between students.
  • Assists students with personal care/activities of daily living including but not limited to: toileting dressing eating handwashing.
  • Assists students with mobility and/or lifting as directed by ESY classroom teacher and other IEP service providers
  • Communicates with teacher and other IEP service providers regarding student progress/behavior/special needs.
  • Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills introduced by the teacher.
  • Assists in the implementation of behavioral modification programs as directed and supervised by the teacher. Keeps behavioral logs (daily and/or weekly).
  • Assists in the implementation of augmentative communication devices/visuals and sensory materials as directed by related service staff & student IEPs
  • Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills large group activities and field trips.
  • Assists with lunch snack and cleanup routines.
  • Dress for physical education/Specials activities so you can participate and assist students.
  • Help dress students for swimming. Dress appropriately so you can participate and assist in all aspects of the swim program as directed by adaptive physical education instructors
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by ESY classroom teacher other IEP service providers ESY Site Supervisor and/or Special Education Director of Intensive Services.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associates Degree or higher; OR Completing at least two years or 48 credit hours of study at an institution of higher education; OR taking and passing a formal assessment measuring ones knowledge of and ability to assist classroom teachers in reading writing and mathematics.   • Training or experience working with Special Needs Students preferred
  • Experience working in an urban setting preferred
  • Experience working with diverse student populations preferred
  • Ability to read interpret and apply student performance data to instructional planning and
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; excellent teamwork skills
  • Bilingual applicants (Spanish) strongly encouraged to apply
