Job Description

Astroboticis at the forefront of advancing space exploration and technology development. Our expertise spans from lunar rovers landers and infrastructure to spacecraft navigation machine vision and computing systems for inspace robotic applications. To date the company has been contracted for two lunar missions and has won more than 60 National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Department of Defense (DoD) and commercial technology contracts worth more than $600 million.

We recently launched and operated the first American lunar lander mission since the Apollo Program. Beyond helping lead America back to the Moon Astrobotic developed and operates reusable vertical takeoff vertical landing (VTVL) rockets and continues to advance nextgeneration VTVL capabilities and advanced rocket engines. Established in 2007 Astrobotic is headquartered in Pittsburgh PA with a propulsion and test campus in Mojave CA.

Astrobotic Technology is seeking a Senior Electrical Hardware Engineer to be an integral part of the Avionics subsystem for Astrobotics line of Lunar landers. You will be responsible for the technical aspects of design manufacturing oversight and testing of avionics hardware for various spacecraft subsystems.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop flight hardware avionics including computing signal conditioning control electronics filtering data acquisition and command & data handling (C&DH).
  • Provide technical and programmatic guidance to internal avionics team members (employees subcontractors consultants) and partner support personnel.
  • Perform trade studies for electrical and avionics systems.
  • Analyze and verify different operating modes of the spacecraft by designing fabricating and testing integrated avionics systems.
  • Utilize partners and suppliers to identify and implement costeffective technically optimal solutions.
  • Research and select components from various external vendors by verifying that the components meet the mission needs.
  • Test fabricated Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) or integrated avionics systems.
  • Develop test scripts or simulations for testing integrated systems.
  • Participate in environmental tests of engineering design units.
  • Participate in qualification tests of flight design units.
  • Deliver technical reports of tests and advancements in avionics and power systems.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Schematic and board design proficiency using software like Altium Eagle OrCAD or similar.
  • Rapid prototype development skills.
  • Strong debugging skills.
  • Experience in component/LineReplaceable Unit (LRU) electrical design.
  • Experience with communications protocols such as RS422/RS485/Controller Area Network (CAN)/Ethernet/Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI)/InterIntegrated Circuit (I2C)/Universal Asynchronous ReceiverTransmitter (UART).
  • Digital analog and signal conditioning design skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of integrated systems technologies.
  • Systems engineering (SE) experience for controlling requirements risks and integration flow.
  • Good communication and technical writing skills.
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Office (MS Office) tools.
  • Basic systems engineering management skills.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in electronics hardware development.
  • Bachelor of Science (B.S. in Electrical or Computer Engineering or Equivalent Work Experience.

Desired Skills & Qualifications:

  • Experience in developing spacecraft electronics systems for a Class D unmanned spacecraft or similar.
  • Ability to mentor and lead small teams of engineers to design complex products.
  • Knowledge of Range Safety and Ground Safety electronics compliance.
  • Capable of utilizing mechanical computer aided design (CAD) tools to develop avionics systems.
  • Capable of programming FieldProgrammable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) microcontrollers computer processors graphic processors or similar.
  • Capable of developing flight software for integrated systems.
  • Knowledge of NASA Standard (NASASTD) 8739 American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Standard (AIAAS)Military Handbook (MILHDBK) 454B or similar.
  • Knowledge of NASASTD 4001 and NASASTD 4003 or similar.
  • Knowledge of space environmental tests.
  • Knowledge of Central Processing Unit (CPU) design.
  • Experience with testing for Military Standard (MILSTD) 461F or similar.
  • Master of Science (M.S. in Electrical or Computer Engineering.


    Salary

    The base salary range represents the low and high end of the anticipated salary range for this position. The actual base salary offered for this position will depend on numerous factors including individual performance business objectives and the candidates professional experience. Base salary is just one component of Astrobotics competitive total rewards strategy.
