Description

The City of Oxnards Cultural and Community Services Department is seeking City Corps Leader Trainees to join our team!

Under close supervision performs a variety of unskilled and skilled duties in support of assigned program functions. This is an entrylevel position designed to provide the Trainee with opportunities to explore and exposure to various career paths and options job readiness and training opportunities.

The City Corps Leader Trainee Iis a classification assigned to staff 18 years of age and older. Incumbents learn and are assigned a variety of duties related to community and public service projects. This position is distinguished from the City Corps Leader Trainee II by the need for direct supervision and the level of training required. The City Corps Leader Trainee I is expected to be enrolled in an educational program during their employment and be actively developing and pursuing a vocational path.

The City Corps Leader Trainee II is the journeylevel classification of the series. This position is expected to work independently and provide project supervision over the Leader Trainee I. This is a classification assigned to staff 18 years of age and older. Incumbents learn and are assigned a variety of duties related to community and public service projects. City Corps Leader Trainees II are expected to be enrolled in an educational program during their employment and be actively developing and pursuing a vocational path.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:
Close supervision is provided by higherlevel staff members. Work is reviewed for accuracy timeliness and thoroughness.
WORK SCHEDULE:
These positions work various schedules at various locations throughout the city of Oxnard. These positions may be required to be available to work additional hours and weekends as needed to respond to workload needs. These positions are not governed by the overtime provisions of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act and are eligible for overtime pay.

PLEASE NOTE:
ExtraHelp positions are not expected to last more than 960 hours. Under the terms of the Citys benefits plan and policies this position is not eligible for benefits due to the short duration of employment. In this position employment with the City of Oxnard is at will and those selected for temporary placement retain the option as does the City of Oxnard to end employment at any time with or without notice and with or without cause.

Essential Functions

Include but are not limited to the following:

  • Observes and participates in various careercentered programs. Participates in job trainings field visits and events that provide exposure to different fields of work.
  • Participates in and oversees lower level Trainees and activities related to event preparation including logistics and maintenance.
  • Participates in and assists with overseeing staff performing activities related to Department programs such as outdoor field preparation recycling program efforts and various recreational events.
  • Responds to questions and concerns from the public and program participants; provides information as appropriate and resolves concerns.
  • Participates in and leads teams in broad areas of community and public service support within the City including supporting various City Departments as well as engaging with community members and outside agencies.
  • Mentors other City Corps program participants.
  • Leads recreational activities for youth members.
  • Performs other related duties as is necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

The following are minimal qualifications necessary for entry into the classification:

Education and Experience:
City Corps Leader Trainees are expected to be enrolled in an educational program during their employment and be actively developing a vocational path.

Must be 18 years of age or older.

License/Certificate:
Depending on assignment some positions may require:
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid class C drivers license within twelve months of employment.
  • A valid First Aid / Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) / Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certificate must be obtained within six months of employment.
  • Must be able to communicate in English effectively both orally and in writing.

Regular and reliable attendance effective communication skills and the development of effective working relationships are requirements of all positions.

City staff may be required to play an active role in the event of an emergency which may include changes in responsibilities and working hours.

There are currently multiple vacancies for City Corps Leader Trainee positions in the Cultural and Community Services Department.

Employees are required to participate in the Citys direct deposit plan and are paid on a biweekly basis.

Pursuant to California Government Code Section 3100 all public Employees are required to serve as disaster service workers subject to such disaster service activities as may be assigned to them.
