The National is looking for a producer to join our desk to write vet and line up CBCs flagship video newscast.

You are a selfstarter with a proven track record of working with reporters to develop craft and vet network news stories. You have proven experience mentoring reporters in the craft of video storytelling. You help elevate the journalism of even the most experienced reporters.

You live and breathe domestic and international news. You know how to frame stories to make them responsive relevant and reflective of Canada with a keen eye knowing the kind of content people in their 30s and 40s want to watch. You have proven experience writing clean copy capturing the hosts voice and incorporating feedback into your work. Youre a selfstarter a collaborative colleague and you thrive in a highpressure dynamic newsroom.

You will also help craft and manage the programs lineup mapping out and producing various presentation elements coordinating with the senior team writers producers directors and other team members to execute the news hour. You are experienced in taking live programs to air in the control room producing live specials and leading the editorial direction from the control room in breaking news situations.

You bring a distinctive life experience perspective or expertise to the team that will enrich The Nationals content. You are a strategic thinker who can make immediate decisions in a complex and stressful environment. And you have a track record of working creatively with video and will help push video storytelling as we reach new audiences on various platforms.

You have a track record of editorial leadership. You have a clear understanding of CBC News Journalistic Standards and Practices and how it informs our work.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • A University degree or equivalent.

  • Five 5 years of experience of which three must involve work in a broadcast news environment.

  • Experience in pitching stories and translating those ideas into onair segments.

  • Excellent writing vetting and production skills.

  • A team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Excellent eye and ear for pacing tone presentation and production.

  • Must be capable of original and creative thought in the production of television news.

  • Experience in a live control room under pressures of a changing lineup or breaking news.

  • Demonstrated news judgement under tight deadline conditions.

  • Demonstrated team leader with solid people skills who can direct perform and delegate assignments across editorial production and technical lines.

  • Experience using Vizrt iNews and Media Central.

  • Must be able to solve problems quickly independently and ingroup discussions.

  • Ability to perform other producer roles in the newsroom.

  • Embraces change and experimentation.

  • Lives and promotes the values of an inclusive and respectful work culture.

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of and/or connection to underrepresented communities across Canada.

  • Demonstrates a deep understanding and appreciation of the different cultures opinions and experiences that make up contemporary Canada (new diverse younger audience).

  • Elevates diverse perspectives ideas and differing points of view.

  • Ability to work in a high pressure environment and to tight deadlines.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices.

  • Flexibility to adapt to changing work patterns and methods. Must be available to work evenings weekend evenings and long days and late nights.
