YSS is looking for a motivated detail oriented approachableStreet Outreach Advocate to join ourYouth Opportunity Center (YOC) team! You will supervise provide support and establish rapport with young adults 1624 who are experiencing homelessness at risk of becoming homeless and/or recently housed. As an Advocate you will ensure the safety and wellbeing of participants while assisting them in meeting their basic needs and working towards stability.
Participant interactions may be in the YOC communitybased settings emergency shelters or schools. Interactions may also be in outdoor locations where young people may be including on the streets of Des Moines camping areas abandoned houses near railroad tracks and other areas as identified. The goal is to ensure all basic needs of the participants are met and that they are provided with a safe welcoming environment in which to work towards stability. Additional responsibilities include:
Supervising supportingand establishing rapport with program participants while maintaining an atmosphere of safety and respect.
Providing programming tohelp participants meet their basicneeds (food transportation clothing hygiene) such as:
increasing participant knowledge of the resources and services available in the community.
Ensuringparticipants are able to access available resources/services
making appropriate referrals tosafe shelterappropriate health care services victim services etc.
enhancingpositive community peer and adult connectedness.
facilitatinggroup learning sessions as needed such as crisis intervention including deescalation andbasic living skills.
Completing participantintakes and documenting informationin ServicePoint for each participant accessing services.
Representing YSS and presenting information related to Iowa Homeless Youth Centers and youth homelessness in the community as needed.

MUST HAVES Required Qualifications
A bachelors degree in social work or a related human services field.
OR
Three 3 years of experience working directly with homeless or atrisk youth.
PLUS
Travel including transporting clients is required for this position. For YSS insurance purposes you must:
be 21 years of age
have a valid stateissued drivers license
have a clean driving record and
have adequate insurance coverage per YSS policy.
SHOULD HAVES Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with individuals of diverse identities including racial ethnic gender sexual orientation and socioeconomic status
An understanding of the needs of youth who are unhoused or precariously housed and the ability to implement intervention strategies and work through their trauma.
A broad working knowledge of the Des Moines area and the ability to identify and connect young people to appropriate resources.
Strong communicationskills including observing listening speaking and writing; able to effectively communicate with participantsthe publiccolleagues and other staff members.

Can establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships.
Speaks a language(s) in addition to English.
