Summary:

HIM Outpatient Coding Coordinator works closely with Coding Manager and coding staff with the planning coordinating and of small projects within coding area helps to improve the overall accuracy integrity and quality of patient data by assisting with outpatient monthly quality monitoring. Responsible for performing research throughout the year on ICD10 and CPT coding regulatory changes and coding rules; assists with preparing educational materials and meeting minutes for internal coding roundtables; may assist with outpatient quality monitoring and help to reeducate and strengthen coding among outpatient coding staff as needed; assists staff with training of new processes; assists with outpatient new hire onboarding and outpatient coding training maintains thorough & current knowledge of all coding rules and performs research on coding regulatory changes that affect coding of ICD10 and CPT. Promotes teamwork and fosters relationships between all disciplines and provides excellent customer service.

Education & Experience:

  • High School or Equivalent required.

  • Required to have a minimum of three years current and continuous acute care hospital outpatient coding.

  • With inpatient coding and APRDRG preferred; advanced knowledge of current codes sets guidelines and preferred; advanced knowledge of current codes sets guidelines and principles; experience in pediatric setting highly desired.

  • Demonstrates superior coding and critical thinking skills with ability to solve problems appropriately using knowledge and current policies/procedures/guidelines and regulations.

  • Technically competent and fluent knowledge in navigation of electronic medical records applications coding decision support tools including encoders abstracting & billing systems electronic medical records (used as coding source documents) and other associated computer applications required.

  • Experience using Microsoft Office applications (excel word outlook power point) required.

  • Ability to remain focused work well independently and productively with minimal guidance and without direct supervision.

  • Must have sharp analytical and critical thinking skills must be highly detail oriented have strong organizational writing interpersonal and communication skills with ability to maintain confidentiality create positive relationships; energetic flexible goal and team oriented.

  • Ability to provide excellent customer service routinely in all types of interactions with all individuals.

  • demonstrated coding knowledge and skills assessment is required through onsite evaluation meeting 90 accuracy or above prior to hire.

  • Skills assessment required with demonstrated ability to easily articulate knowledge of coding guidelines and procedures.


Certification/Licensure:

  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT) required with Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) preferred.
