Job Description
The Law Fellow position reports directly to the University Legal Counsel and represents the
legal interests of the University in accordance with the laws and policies of the Commonwealth
of Virginia. The Fellow will be assigned research writing and other projects arising out of a
wide range of subject matters handled by University Legal Counsel including legal matters
concerning constitutional rights athletics employment education research governance
compliance intellectual property information technology privacy health care benefits
litigation Freedom of Information Act student conduct policy government relations contracts
and construction.
The Law Fellow may receive assignments from all of the attorneys in the Office of University
Legal Counsel working under the direct supervision of the University Legal Counsel. The
Fellow will attend meetings with clients and participate in discussing a wide range of legal
matters handled by University Legal Counsel daily.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conduct legal research on a wide range of topics analyzing summarizing and reporting
on research including review of documents for compliance with state and federal laws
and University policies and regulations
Work collaboratively with counsel and highlevel clients confidentially with a
professional level of communication and skill and to creatively assist with workload in
the office
Participate in meetings with University clients and other administrative offices and
attend hearings both in court and student conduct
Draft and edit legal documents
Perform other related duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
Applicants must have applied for admission to the Virginia bar with a goal of admission
by December of their fellowship year.
Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school with a record of strong academic
achievement.
Excellent research and writing skills; an interest in learning about and supporting the
legal mission of a major academic institution; ability to work effectively and
cooperatively with attorneys staff and other university employees; ability to handle
multiple projects concurrently.

Additional Information
This position is located in Blacksburg Virginia.
The start of this position is August 4 2025 for a oneyear restricted term. At the sole discretion of the University Legal Counsel and the continued availability of funding there is potential for this position to be extended for an additional year.
This position will remain open until filled. This position will not sponsor applicants for work visas. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.
The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.
