Job Description

The Opportunity

The Boiler Safety Officer (BSO) reports to the Operations Leader and is accountable for maintaining and enhancing public safety by educating the public and industry as well as ensuring that codes regulations and standards of safety are understood and observed. The BSO must also serve the clients needs in the construction fabrication and repair of ASME /CSA code shops by serving as the Authorized Boiler Inspector as per code requirements.

Highly preferred: Certified Refrigeration Mechanic and/or Refrigeration Operator with Chief Engineer experience and/or Quality control Systems related to boiler pressure vessel manufacturing repair or alteration in either shop or field.

Pay Grade: 17 (Starting at $52.89 per hour)
Reports to: Operations Leader Energy (Lower Mainland North)

As a Boiler Safety Officer (BSO) you will:

  • Inspection:provide inspection services including worksite audits incident investigations and hazard eliminations to clients and stakeholders to ensure that safety regulations codes and standards are correctly implemented and reviews requests for variances and equivalencies and makes recommendations to the Safety Manager.
  • Compliance:implement compliance & enforcement policies by providing clear direction and outlining consequences to clients and by providing disciplinary recommendations to Senior Safety Officer and Safety Manager.
  • Education:educate clients and stakeholders on how to meet safety requirements and provide information on new requirements and trends by creating and/or providing presentations demonstrations or individual coaching. Assisting the code shops in the interpretation and application of codes.
  • Research:support research tasks by documenting inspections providing audits and investigating incidences and maintain expertise by staying up to date on industry changes and upgrading knowledge and skills on an ongoing basis.
  • Training:help Senior Safety Officer to develop new Safety Officers by providing onthejob training regular mentoring and ongoing technical support.

Knowledge Skills & Experience you have:

  • Highly preferred: Certified Refrigeration Mechanic and/or Refrigeration Operator with Chief Engineer experience and/or Quality control Systems related to boiler pressure vessel manufacturing repair or alteration in either shop or field.
  • Minimum completion of grade 12 high school diploma and/or equivalent education.
  • Preference for a twoyear diploma from a recognized Institute of Technology in a related field. BC 1st Class (preferred) or 2nd Class Power Engineer certificate with a three year time allowance to write and successfully complete the 1st Class exam.
  • Minimum of five years related experience in a power plant over 1000m2 or an equivalency.
  • NBIC commission or willingness to obtain within first year of employment
  • NBIC AI endorsement or willingness to start applying within first year of employment
  • Knowledge of Boiler Pressure Vessel Piping Fittings and Refrigeration codes.
  • Ability to assess situations that may lead to a variance.
  • Excellent problem solving and decisionmaking skills.
  • Ability to write concise reports.
  • Good keyboarding and computer skills including knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • A Valid BC Drivers License and a willingness to travel
  • Good physical ability to carry a toolbox (up to 30 lbs. climb ladders and stairways walk on rough uneven ground enter tight enclosed or confined spaces and drive for long distances (A medical assessment will be requested).
