Job Description
A fulltime research assistant (lab manager) is sought for the lab of Dr. Sora Shin at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at Virginia Tech Carilion (). This role will independently support research projects and oversee all research activities in the Shin lab. This position is a professional research position that is also expected to have the responsibilities of a Lab Manager include mouse colony maintenance and animal handling as well as general cell and molecular laboratory techniques. Additional duties include basic laboratory management including ordering supplies preparing buffers and solutions maintaining laboratory equipment and organization of lab manuals/protocols and research materials.
The Shin lab employs mice model systems and the range of methodologies include behavioral assay stereotaxic surgery in vivo imaging molecular cloning and confocal microscopy. Use of standard lab instrumentation e.g. centrifuges and PCRs are expected. A successful candidate should have proven experience in those areas and in working with tissue culture cells. The candidate would also be in charge of placing orders and maintaining the lab organized and in compliance with all regulations. Although the candidate will be involved in supporting many aspects of experimentation daily he/she in addition is expected to be the gotoperson for all trainees in the Shin lab.
Required Qualifications
Previous experience in a biomedical research laboratory is preferred but not required.
Ability to work with small animals including handling restraining tissue harvesting genotyping and monitoring animal welfare.
Ability to perform basic molecular cloning brain sectioning cardiac perfusion immunohistochemistry.
Excellent organizational and communication skills.
Ability to work individually and as part of a team. Proven success organizing and managing a large complex work load
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelors degree in bioscience neuroscience biology or related field with substantial relevant experience will be considered.
Previous laboratory experience with one or more of the following laboratory techniques strongly preferred:
Genotyping DNA cloning immunohistochemistry and Gene expression analysis using qPCR Tissue culture of mammalian cell lines and/or Fluorescence microscopy.
