The City of Battle Creek will begin its recruitment process for establishing a hiring eligibility list for Entry Level Firefighters starting March 14 2025. Minimum requirements include a High School Diploma or GED equivalency and must be 18 years of age upon hire. Applicants are instructed to complete an online application. Deadline to submit applications is 12:00am on April 15 2025.

Applicants must be able to attend one of the following entrylevel examination sessions: April 24 2025 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm or April 25 2025 from 8:30am to 11:30am. Exams will be held at Full Blast located at 35 Hamblin Avenue Battle Creek Michigan 49017. Exams will be graded onsite. Candidates that receive 70 or greater will be scheduled to take the Physical Agility Test.

Physical Agility Testing will take place at Full Blast on April 25 2025 from 12:00pm 8:00pm and Saturday April 26^th from 8:00am8:00pm. Applicants must have the availability to attend a physical agility test during these time periods.

Structured Oral Interviews will be scheduled for those who successfully pass both the written exam and physical agility test. Interviews will be held on Saturday April 26 2025 from 9:00am to 8:00pm and Sunday April 27 2025 from 9:00am to 5:00pm. Applicants must have the availability to attend an interview during these time periods.

• Responds to emergency calls for service such as fire medical and hazardous situations with fire company; connects and controls hose lines and nozzles erects ladders turns water on and off and uses extinguishers axes hooks and life lines. Performs technical rescue operations vehicle accidents and extrication and search and rescue operations as required or assigned.
• Responds to calls that require the use of resuscitating equipment removes people from danger and gives first aid as necessary. Drives fire apparatus operates pumps and uses other auxiliary firefighting equipment. Ensures that emergency vehicles are completely stocked and maintained in a safe and efficient operational condition.
• Participates in overhaul operations to ensure that fire is completely extinguished. Performs salvage operations makes periodic inspections of hydrants and participates in fire prevention inspections. Performs general maintenance work involving the upkeep of a fire station such as cleans and washes walls; cares for grounds; makes minor repairs; washes hangs and dries hoses; washes cleans polishes and tests fire apparatus.
• Participates in drills and other departmental training activities. Participates in arson and fire investigations.
• Maintains the daily station logs prepares accident reports fire reports maintains laundry and cleaning records and services other records and reports as required.
• Participates in public relations and educational activities; conducts station tours and fire prevention demonstrations to the public; installs smoke detectors.
• May occasionally oversee the work of one or more less senior firefighters.

• Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.

Special Requirements:

• Obtain Firefighter I and II Medical First Responder and Hazardous Material Operations within 1 year of hire.
• Valid drivers license in the State of Michigan.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

Expected to perform the following or it is a critical part of the position: standing driving (motor vehicles heavy equipment at a high rate of speed) lifting (over 50 lbs. climbing (stairs and ladders) seeing (near and/or far color depth field) hearing talking working inside outside and at night. ENVIRONMENT: working around hazardous machinery and at considerable heights wet surroundings loud and low noises cluttered floor area high and low temperatures poor ventilation dust and fumes.
