The Indian power market isevolving rapidly. The increasing share of variable renewable energy in theelectricity system requires a flexible grid financially sound and efficient powerdistribution companies and demand to serve as a resource. Achieving theseoutcomes would need dynamic regulations new business models innovativefinancial instruments and robust institutional frameworks.
To enhancegridflexibility CEEW team studies the current and future power systems toinform planning and operations and procurement and dispatch of electricity incosteffective ways. We undertake grid simulation exercises andtechnoeconomic analyses for emerging solutions such as largescale energystorage coal flexibilisation and new technologies such as offshore wind.
The candidate in this role will support power system studies focused atstate and national level and undertake quantitative and qualitative analysis ofissues concerning integration of variable renewables with the grid and barriersto increasing deployment and procurement of flexibility options. The candidatewill work on modelling platforms CEEWs internal data analytics platforms andcritically review the current regulatory frameworks and market mechanisms to identifychanges required for integrating RE at scale.
The candidate should have a deep understanding of Indias power sectormarket structures and operations in India and other emerging and advancedeconomies and have a demonstrable research experience. In addition to theduties and responsibilities outlined below the candidate should be preparedas and when necessary to take on additional responsibilities and respond toevents and developments that cannot be anticipated easily.

Job Duties and Accountabilities
Research
Carry out power system simulation studiesaccounting for inter and intrastate transmission networks to identify theneed and the role of different supply and demandside resources includingenergy storage in achieving a clean reliable and costeffective power system
Design and simulate modelling scenarios toreflect the realities of the current system transition challenges andopportunities and analyse model outputs to distil policy and regulatoryinsights for effecting change
Analyse data pertaining to existing andemerging challenges with high RE penetration in the grid (such as net loadvariability transmission bottlenecks and losses transmission outages /loss ofload reactive power and ramping needs and other grid management issues) and identifymitigation strategies in the form of technology solutions associatedregulatory and market enablers and procurement approaches
Gather inputs and data from concerneddepartments and stakeholders as per project requirements for building robustmodelling inputs and assumptions as well as validating proposed solutions
Regularly track important policy andregulatory developments in the sector and conduct rigorous literature review toidentify new scenarios and problem statements that must be analysed
Write highquality research reports blogspolicy briefs and prepare memos and presentations for submission of inputs on draftregulations/guidelines/policies/discussion papers
Stakeholderengagement
Conductand support regular discussions with stakeholders especially with state loaddispatchers regulators discoms and other research organisations to understandthe needs and challenges gather inputs and feedback and disseminate findingsand recommendations
Supportthe team in organising stakeholder consultations / webinars / events for wideroutreach and visibility of our research
SelectionCriteria
Qualification
A Ph.D / Masters degree in power systems /power systems management energy economics and related fields
Any certifications related to power systemmodelling technoeconomics of new and clean energy technologies and powermarket operations would be desirable
Work experience
35 years of relevant work experience
Knowledge of power markets in advanced andemerging economies will be an advantage
Key skills
Strong analytical and research skills andproficiency in using tools such as Plexos GridPath PyPSA
Ability to analyse information to present it ina clear and accurate manner both verbal and written
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Ability to learn new tools to manage processand drive insights from datasets
Willingnessto show initiative in order to handle unforeseen challenges
Ability to work in an interdisciplinary andmulticultural environment
