Location:Spokane CC Main Campus Spokane

Department:SCC Science

Open continuous.

Starting salary for this position is: $40.83 $86.87 per hour based on workload category.

This is an adjunct (parttime) position. Compensation will be prorated according to the amount of workload assigned. Spokane Colleges reserves the right to cancel this recruitment without notice. Academic employees are represented by the Association of Higher Education (AHE) which is affiliated with NEA and WEA. Membership is optional.

About theBiology Instructor Adjunct Spokane Community College

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepares for and instructs collegelevel classes and laboratories in Biology including but not limited to: General Biology and Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II.
  • Prepare for and instruct courses for inperson hybrid or online modalities.
  • Communicate expectations and establish clear grading criteria through a combination of schedules office hours email and other effective means of responsive and timely communication.
  • Provide timely feedback and support to students.
  • Maintain accurate records for course grades.
  • May participate in department and general faculty meetings as needed.
  • Maintain professional standards in interactions with the college community.
  • Comply with state and federal law applicable to professional duties and responsibilities; follow established procedures in areas such as printing turning in grades bookstore orders student safety and health issues and related administrative processes.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • An earned Masters degree in Biology or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Previous teaching experience.
  • Effective oral written interpersonal and collaborative skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote the welfare and best interests of students at all times.
  • Familiarity with learning management system technology.
  • Demonstrated understanding and support of the role that community colleges serve in higher education and specifically the mission values goals and objectives of the Spokane Colleges.
  • Demonstrated competence in working with diverse student populations and an appreciation for diverse voices in the classroom.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience teaching college biology courses.
  • Experience using CANVAS or other online course management technology as an instructor.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate knowledge and skills both in oral and written form with students and colleagues.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well as a team member.
  • Community college work experience.
  • Interest in and knowledge of biology curriculum specific to allied health fields such as nursing.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student success in classes composed of students with a wide range of abilities and backgrounds.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Person hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of U.S. Citizenship or lawful authorization to work in the United States. This is an absolute condition of employment. An offer of employment will not carry with it any responsibility or obligation on the part of the district to sponsor an H1B visa. In addition the Spokane Colleges maintain a drugfree work environment and prohibits all smoking in the college buildings and stateowned vehicles. Must be able to successfully work in and promote a multicultural work and education environment.

Prior to a new hire a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicants suitability and competence to perform in the position.Once an applicant is chosen for a position they are required to complete and submit a declaration regarding sexual misconduct and investigation per state law.

Benefits Information

Adjunct faculty must work two 2 consecutive quarters at 50 or more of fulltime academic load in order to qualify for benefits (based on instructional hours only). Once determined to be eligible benefits begin on the first day of the month following the beginning of the quarter. Medical dental life and long term disability insurance benefits are provided as currently administered under Public Employees Benefits Board; TIAACref retirement plan or WA State Retirement Plan; leave accruals and usage are governed by the faculty master contract.
