Job Description

Job Summary

Working independently under the general supervision of the Senior Director Global Programs and Services and receiving work direction from the Assistant Director of International Student Advising the International Student Advisor (ISA) provides direct service to students in F1 and J1 status as part of a dynamic team serving over 4000 international students.

The incumbent offers administrative and technical support helps with facilitating programming interacts with faculty administrators staff and offcampus agencies. These areas often overlap in the fulfillment of responsibilities. This is a fastpaced position supporting one of the key strategic goals of the Global Engagement in creating a global ethos and helping with the internationalization of the campus.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide oneonone and group advising to F1 and J1 students with respect to the maintenance of legal immigration status and employability.
  • Process paperwork for F1 and J1 students benefits such as OPT and CPT as well as Changes of Status Reduced Course Loads Extensions of Program Academic Training etc.
  • Provide administrative and technical support in the sunapsis data management system.
  • Plan coordinate and present workshops and information sessions to communicate F1 and J1 student immigration regulations and SJSU policies to international students and campus constituents
  • Advise Students with academic and personal concerns. As appropriate refer students to colleagues for professional support.
  • Serve as Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) by maintaining in depth knowledge of Department of State and Department of Homeland Security rules and regulations
  • Assist the International Programs Manager with the coordination of the international student welcome sessions International Education Week Global Spartan Month and other programs (e.g. peer mentorship program training) and in partnership with campus colleagues
  • Assist in the creation revision and ongoing support of office publications website and ecommunications
  • Serve on international student scholarship review committee
  • Serve as liaison to various campus departments and units

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of U.S. government immigration regulations; immigration advising methods procedures and practices; and SEVIS
  • Advanced knowledge of databases (i.e. sunapsis ISSM PeopleSoft etc. and computer programs
  • Ability to use judgment to independently analyze and interpret regulations pertaining to F1 and J1 students and to develop creative solutions to complex cases
  • Ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters
  • Must possess excellent customer service and public relations skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Organizational planning and multitasking skills
  • Crosscultural sensitivity and ability to work well with individuals from a variety of cultural ethnic religious and linguistic backgrounds
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student record information and to appropriately handle sensitive communication with students faculty staff and external agencies

Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent to graduation from a fouryear college or university in a related field including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques interviewing and conflict resolution where such are jobrelated
  • Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. A masters degree in Counseling Clinical Psychology Social Work or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience
  • A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree in International Education Higher Education Administration or International Relations Global Studies preferred
  • One year of F1 and/or J1 immigration advising and DSO/ARO working experience and/or one year of experience advising international students
  • Experience with USCIS regulations
  • Experience with SEVIS procedures
  • Experience maintaining student data and records in database such as sunapsis ISSM etc.
  • Student service advising experience in a university setting
  • Experience interacting with individuals in a crosscultural environment

Compensation

Classification: Student Services Professional III
Anticipated Hiring Range: $5294/month $6107/month
CSU Salary Range: $5294/month $7893/month
