GENERALSUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Working under general direction of the Nurse Manager theincumbent is responsible for effectively communicating with the oral surgeryteam while assisting during all phases of the clinical sessions. Accurately prepares each room with equipmentand supplies and assists with oral surgical procedures including taking vitalsigns digital images and xrays and reviewing postoperative instruction topatients.

PRINCIPALDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Preparespatient for treatment; review medical and dental history and consult withmedical practitioner. Conducts oral exam and takes vital signs makingappropriate notations in patient record and verbally reporting findings tophysician.

Thesurgical assistant is responsible for making sure all rooms are properlystocked with instruments forms etc. and correctly decontaminates rooms aftereach procedure.

Accuratelytakes impressions bite registrations and fabricates models for preoperativeOrthognathic and trauma patients; prepares patient for procedures; cleanssterilizes and sets up operating room.

Usingestablished written guidelines provides pre and postoperative information topatients being admitted to Surgical Day Care Unit. (i.e. postextractioninstruction care of wire jaw nutritional guidelines for fracture andorthognathic patients).

AssistsOral Surgical staff with procedures and patients under local nitrous oxideI.V. valium and deep sedation and general anesthesia; under direct supervisionof surgeon performs extra and intraoral procedures (i.e. suture removaldressing changes irrigations changing elastics).

Exposesand develops xrays; ensures that xrays are of adequate diagnostic qualityduplicate xrays as needed.

Performsselected clerical tasks as needed and all other task as assigned by thephysicians and the .Nurse Manager

Mayprovide coverage for administrative staff including front desk responsibilities.

LICENSESCERTIFICATIONS and/or REGISTRATIONS (if applicable):

  • Current Certification as a Dental Assistant (CDA) or as a Certified Oraland Maxillofacial Surgical Assistant (COMSA) by the Dental Assisting NationalBoard (DANB) required.
  • Successfully obtain a DAANCE Certification of completion of the Oraland Maxillofacial Surgeons Office Anesthesia Assistants Program of theAmerican Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons within the first 12months of employment.
  • Valid Dental Assistant License from the Board of Registration inDentistry for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts required
  • Current Radiology and BLScertifications required.
