Radioactive Waste Project Lead


This is a field/homebased fulltime permanent position.


Our Office of Radiation Protection is seeking a dedicated leader to join the Office of Radiation Protection within the Division of Environmental Public Health. As a Project Lead for the Waste Management Section youll oversee the Radioactive Waste Program ensuring compliance with state and federal standards to protect public health from ionizing radiation.


In this role you will:

  • Lead technical and support staff to advance the programs mission.
  • Ensure radioactive waste activities meet state and federal standards.
  • Support environmental justice efforts under the Healthy Environments for All (HEAL) Act.
  • Collaborate with external partners and engage with overburdened communities.

Location and Flexibility:We value worklife balance and offer the convenience of remote work! This position will give you the option to work from home or from the closest DOH facility. Attending inperson events or working Inoffice is rarely required and would be scheduled in advance. This is a remote homebased position available to applicants residing anywhere in Washington State as well as those living near the Oregon/Washington border and the Idaho/Washington border.


Required Qualifications (you must meet ONE of the provided options and any additional criteria listed.:

Experience defined below may have been gained through paid or unpaid activities. Please ensure any relevant experience defined below is outlined in your cover letter resume and/or applicant profile.


Option 1: Eight 8 years of professional experience in an official radiation control programusing radiation detection and contamination survey instrumentsthat includes the application of As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) principles and dosimetry.


Option 2:Completion of Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program (NNPP) AND two 2 or more years ofprofessional experience in an official radiation control programusing radiation detection and contamination survey instrumentsthat includes the application of As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) principles and dosimetry.


Option 3: A Bachelor of Science degree in physical science engineering or biological science AND four 4 years of professional experience in an official radiation control programusing radiation detection and contamination survey instrumentsthat includes the application of As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) principles and dosimetry.


Option 4: Master of Science degree in physical science engineering or biological science AND two 2 years of professional experience in an official radiation control programusing radiation detection and contamination survey instrumentsthat includes the application of As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) principles and dosimetry.


NOTE: An official radiation control program is a radiation control program that is large enough to devote fulltime staff to the review and control of the use of ionizing radiation with the intent of limiting and reducing human exposure to radiation.


Computer Skills:Use of computer word processing input data into databases related to work activities and communicate with others verbally and in writing including utilizing email systems.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Experience in performing complex radioactive materials licensing actions and inspecting the facilities using radioactive materials for compliance with regulations and licenses.
  • Experience in decommissioning of facilities that have used radioactive material.
  • Working knowledge of Department of Health regulations pertaining to radiation protection 246 WAC)
  • Experience with USDOT regulations pertaining to the transportation of radioactive materials
  • Experience with investigating radiation incidents or accidents.
  • Experience interpreting regulations and policies governing the use of radioactive materials.
  • Skilled in the use of dose assessment or performance assessment models such as RESRAD visual sampling plan (VSP) GoldSim MicroShield and COMPLY.
  • Project support experience that includes managing tasks and reporting progress to project managers

This position is covered by a bargaining unit for which the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE) is the exclusive representative.

  • Engage in emergency response exercises and highpriority assignments as assigned during emergency events.
