This employee an Internal Board of Lactation Consultant Examiner (IBCLC) will aid breastfeeding mothers in the inpatient and outpatient settings. They will also educate the mother and staff regarding updated lactation practices. The employee will maintain competency and application of the scientific knowledge necessary to meet patient needs. The employee demonstrates thorough organizational skills and the ability to provide ease in flow of work. The IBCLC is knowledgeable and supportive of the hospital department and nursing unit philosophies.
Provides problem solving advice and support mothers and staff to decrease the incidence of unresolved problems of breastfeeding
Provides individual consultation to hospital patients and outpatients
Performs breastfeeding assessments on new mothers and infants
Documents teaching/progress and place in obstetrician and pediatricians chart of patient
Serves as a resource for staff physicians and support group counselors including orientation of new staff and inservice education
Provides services to perinatal clients who present to the Center with lactation issues or problems
Provides a positive breastfeeding experience for the nursing dyad
Promotes bonding of mother and baby
Develops a plan of care with mother to support her breastfeeding; provides constant teaching and support
Increases the percentage of breastfeeding mothers
Establishes and teaches inhospital breastfeeding classes
Gives anticipatory guidance to mothers
Provides phone numbers for questions and concerns after discharge to the mother
Establishes network with community services that would enhance support systems for the breastfeeding mothers; refers mothers to a support group and community resources as needed
Coordinates counseling support area for pumping follow up D/C care for mothers of highrisk infants who wish to provide breast milk for infant
Assists in the coordination of dispensed breastfeeding devices
Confers with staff on patient need
Consults with primary care givers for mother/infant as needed
Participates as a team member with staff and physicians to provide comprehensive holistic care
Coordinates and/or participate in a breastfeeding committee
Establishes/reviews/revises standards of care supporting breastfeeding
Develops/reviews/revises breastfeeding policies care plans charting systems for documentation teaching progress notes and patient literature
Maintains statistics/data to assess and evaluate effectiveness of provided services
Provides outpatient followup and education for breastfeeding women
Refers outpatients with medical problems to their physician
Communicates with the referring health care provider/agency regarding follow up/progress of referrals received
Maintains compliance with all company policies procedures and standards of conduct
Complies with HIPAA privacy and security requirements to maintain confidentiality at all times
Performs other duties as assigned
Education:
Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited nursing program (required)
o All new hire Associate Degree Registered Nurses new graduate and experienced are required to start an approved BSN program within three years of hire (required)
Bachelors Degree in Nursing from an accredited nursing program (preferred)
Experience:
Three to five 35 years of patient care experience in obstetrical and/or neonatal healthcare (required)
Recent experience working with mothers and infants who are breastfeeding (required)
Licensure:
Active Kentucky Registered Nurse License or compact license with privileges to work in Kentucky
Certification:
Basic Life Saving (BLS) accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) (required)
Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) (required)
Certified Lactation Consultant (CLC) (required)
o International BoardCertified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) within 2 years of position hire date (required)
