WHAT WE OFFER:

The County of Ventura offers an attractive compensation and benefits package. Aside from our base salary range an employee within thePharmacist classification will also be eligible for the following:

  • Educational Incentive:Incumbents may be eligible for an educational incentive of 2.5 3.5 or 5 based on completion of an Associates Bachelors or Masters degree that is not required for the classification.
  • Bilingual Incentive:Incumbents may also be eligible for bilingual incentive depending upon operational need and certification of skill.
  • Vacation Accrual:Initially approximately 14 days of vacation per year increasing to 19 days at 5 years of service 21 days at 12 years of service 22 days at 13 years of service 23 days at 14 years of service 25 days at 15 years of service and topping out at 26 days per year at 20 years of service.
  • Vacation Redemption:After approximately 7 years of service ability to cash in or redeem up to 80 hours of vacation accrued in the current year after using 80 hours in the preceding 12 months.
  • Deferred Compensation:Eligible to participate in the Countys 401(k) Shared Savings Plan and/or the Section 457 Plan. This position is eligible for up to a 3 match on your 401(k) contributions.
  • Health Plans:You are afforded a flexible credit allowance for purchasing medical dental and/or vision insurance from a group of authorized plans. For Plan Year 2025: Employee Only $509 Employee 1 $779 and Employee 2 or more $983
  • Flexible Spending Accounts:Pretax benefit towards eligible medical dental and vision care expenses.
  • Pension Plan:Participation in the Countys defined benefit pension plan. If eligible you may establish reciprocity with other public retirement systems such as CalPERS.
  • Holidays:12 paid days per year which includes a scheduled floating holiday.


An employee within the Pharmacist PDP (Per Diem Pool) classification receives limited benefits such as Shift Differential Standby and Callback Premium Pay and participation in the Ventura County Employees Retirement Association if they are assigned a work schedule of sixtyfour hours or more per biweek. Incumbents hired into Pharmacist PDP are not guaranteed any specific number of hours per biweekly pay period and may be relieved from duty when management determines there is insufficient work.

THE DEPARTMENT

Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC) is a fully integrated comprehensive system of hospital clinic and specialty services. The system provides access to highquality compassionate health care to residents throughout Ventura County.


While VCMC provides access to health care to all county residents special emphasis is placed on providing access to care for the underserved and those facing barriers to access. Referred to as the safety net population these individuals comprise over threequarters of the care provided by VCMC.


Santa Paula Hospitalis an acute 49bed general community hospital providing compassionate care to all Santa Clara Valley residentsoffering a comprehensive list of inpatient and outpatient services and fullservice departments for diagnostic procedures treatment aftercare and ongoing care.


THE POSITION

Under general direction the Pharmacist and Pharmacist PDP compound and dispense pharmaceutical preparations and supplies for Ventura County Medical Center patients and the Santa Paula Hospital Outpatient Inpatient or Oncology Infusion Pharmacies.

APPROXIMATE PAYROLL TITLES AND ANNUAL SALARIES
Pharmacist:$59.03 $82.64 Hourly
PharmacistPDP: $87.60 Hourly

The Pharmacist and Pharmacist PDP are represented by Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and are eligible for overtime compensation.

Examples Of Duties

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Review and approve all medication orders using appropriate evidencebased and patientcentered information and assessment;
  • Provide expert information to healthcare staff and/or patients about and other pharmaceuticals; monitor usage of facility identified highrisk medications;
  • Complies with all policy and regulatory requirements regarding medication order receiving verifying dispensing and documentation;
  • Documents and records clinical interventions on therapeutic recommendations discrepancies associated with the Medication Administration Record (MAR) clinically significant drug reactions and all serious or unusual drug reactions;
  • Conducts or participates in the orientation and training of pharmacy technicians pharmacists pharmacy students/interns/residents;
  • Selects compounds prepares dispenses and delivers nonhazardous and hazardous medications solutions and supplies incorporating proper necessary calculations and/or supervises technicians in the performance of such duties;
  • Answer and triage phone calls made to the pharmacy department;
  • Participates in department quality assurance activities;
  • Receive dispense and keep accurate records of all controlled substance activities;
  • Replenish drug and maintain pharmacy automation to ensure proper functioning and operation;
  • Perform and document monthly unit inspections of assigned areas for proper storage of medication and supplies and for expired medications and supplies;
  • Takes home medication histories and provides medication consultation at patient bedside to review discharge medications as requested;
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Typical Qualifications


These are entrance requirements to the examination process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.


EDUCATION TRAINING and EXPERIENCE

Pharmaceutical degree from an accredited school of pharmacy (Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy) and some work experience in inpatient and/or outpatient pharmacy practice.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be willing and able to lift 25 pounds
Must possess and maintain a current valid State of California license as a Pharmacist

DESIRED
Work experience in an inpatient pharmacy setting with knowledge of general inpatient pharmacy procedures and practices
Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited School of Pharmacy
Completion of PGY1 Pharmacy Residency program

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of: prescription filling activities; unit dose systems; parenteral nutrition dosing and management; sterile and nonsterile compounding; pharmacology and pathophysiology; professional standards and practices; Federal State Board of Pharmacy The Joint Commission and Department of Public Health laws regulations and guidelines pertaining to patient care; sterile compounding of nonhazardous and hazardous medication.

Working ability to: operate a computer; perform pharmaceutical mathematical calculations; research read interpret and communicate medical and pharmacy literature; communicate clearly and effectively; review and verify medication orders accurately and timely through electronic health record; use aseptic technique for nonsterile and sterile compounding of nonhazardous and hazardous medications; supervise pharmacy technicians; and work cooperatively with other staff and health care providers.

ELIGIBLE LIST

Applicants successfully completing the exam process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one 1 year. The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill current and future Regular (Temporary and Fixedterm) Per Diem Pool Intermittent and Extrahelp vacancies. There are currently two 2 Regular Pharmacist vacancies and one 1 Pharmacist Per Diem Pool vacancy.
