The UHealth system at the University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a Director Medical Communicationsin the Marketing & Communications Department.
SUMMARY
The Director of Medical Communications and Media Relations contributes to the development of Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Centers integrated communications strategy with a focus on earned media. The director helps elevate Sylvesters reputation nationally by conducting proactive and targeted media outreach as well as identifying awards and other recognition opportunities. We are looking for a candidate with proven track record that can serve as the media lead for Sylvester in Miami and at selected national events maintaining effective relationships with media.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
Develops and implements communications plans that promote department initiatives programs products services and fundraising events.
Writes and distributes news releases and other media materials as appropriate to local media.
Works collaboratively with department leadership to develop stories and multimedia content that support brand messaging and positioning.
Pitches promotes and secures placements of stories in local regional national international and trade media.
Determines and produces content needed to secure placements.
Prepares reports of coverage share of voice ad dollar conversion and impressions.
Monitors media for developing stories and secures thirdparty commentary placements.
Develops and oversees adherence to media protocols and best practices.
Remains abreast of current regulatory requirements affecting department functions.
Handles afterhours media requests.
Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures. Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Bachelors degree in Communications or relevant field
Experience:
Minimum 7 years of relevant experience
Knowledge Skills and Attitudes:
Knowledge Skills and Attitudes:
Impeccable copywriting and copyediting abilities.
Ability to write effective communication copy around cancerrelated topics and translate science research and clinical care to reporters and lay audiences.
Experience using media relations platforms such as Meltwater Cision Newswise and EurkAlert.
Experience using project management tools such as Asana and Smartsheet.
Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to handle multiple projects and adapt to evolving priorities.
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Applications including MS Office Suite.
Basic knowledge in Adobe PDF editor.
Familiarity with embargoed pitching requirements.
Fluent Spanish speaker is preferred but not required.
DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM
Department Specific Functions
Establishes and drives earned media strategies including editorial calendar and media list development.
Coordinates local press events and media interviews.
Serves as media relations point of contact at national conferences.
Develops and maintains strong relationships with key internal stakeholders including researchers and physicians.
Develops and maintains strong relationships with local national and international reporters.
Develops all media relations materials including media advisories press releases talking points story pitches tip sheets and manages the approval process with internal stakeholders and partners.
Collaborates with media relations colleagues across the health system.
Assists in the creation of digital video audio and print content.
Deploys knowledge of the current the media landscape to optimize placements.
Supports with story amplification efforts to reach target audiences.
Supports with executive positioning efforts for Sylvester leadership.
Provides media relations tracking and analytics and develops reports.
Develops awards submissions.
Any appropriate combination of relevant education experience and/or certifications may be considered.
