Purpose of the Role

The primary purposes of this role is to work with the CEO and the Executive team to grow and strengthen Philanthropy Australia to enhance its effectiveness and influence within the philanthropic sector and to help harness philanthropys power and its impact. Positioning PA as a thought leader in growing more and better giving in Australia in the context of PAs future strategy 2026 and representing PA and the wider philanthropic sector in a range of forums the Executive Director will share their passion for philanthropy linked with their understanding of membership organisations and provide the inspiring strategic and inclusive leadership needed to deliver on Philanthropy Australias purpose and vision.

Key Responsibilities

  • Overseeing the growth and development of the Knowledge and Practice Team to ensure that PA members and partners have access to inspiring and engaging knowledge and education initiatives and leading the programming for major events (including biannual Conference). This Practice focus of the role will oversee the design and delivery of PAs practice and professional learning program through a broad range of activities and resources identify good philanthropic practice globally and within Australia and showcase this work by curating designing and developing learning resources to share with wider audiences and support our members to become exemplars of good philanthropic practice.
  • Partnering with the CEO to develop and support a growing pool of National and State based Strategic Partners Champions and Supporters as core funding and major event partners delivering on commitments to our existing Strategic Funders and national Philanthropy Champions and developing a pipeline for future core funding and projectbased funding in line with PAs strategy.
  • Overseeing the effective operations of the Marketing and Communications Team to support the organisation to achieve its strategic intent including membership engagement policy priorities and promoting best practice philanthropy ensuring the amplification of PAs messaging through our MarCom channels and wider media and contributing to the quality consistency and reach of PAs brand.
  • Leading the development and growth of PAHosted Sector Initiatives in line with PAs mission and future strategy which currently includes the LEAF evaluation network (LEAF) Foundations Group for Impact Investing (FGII) and Pay What it Takes (PWIT) and overseeing the integration of NEXUS and New Gen to continue to build a strong proposition for next gen philanthropists.
  • Providing support for the First Nations Governance Committee and PAs First Nations philanthropy engagement.
  • Providing a transparent empowering and actionoriented approach to People Management reflected in daytoday line management of Directors and support to other team members creating a strong team culture aligned with PAs Values and Behaviours.

    Selection Criteria

    The successful applicant will have demonstrable experience of:

    • Working as a senior leader and respected practitioner in the philanthropy sector
    • Inspiring and building a great team culture contributing to the creation of a positive workplace culture through highly collaborative valuesled leadership.
    • Leading multidisciplinary teams within philanthropic not for profit membership or peak bodies through strategic and resultsoriented leadership.
    • Working within a membership structure (Highly Desirable)
    • Developing and nurturing complex engagements with highnetworth individuals and working in collaboration toward a mutually beneficially and ongoing relationship.
    • Building partnerships and securing income through grants and earned sources
    • Developing and delivering high impact projects and collaboration.
    • Building strong and sustainable relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
    • Practicing high emotional intelligence with the ability to unite diverse teams to focus on a common goal to drive significant and membership engagement outcomes for the organisation.

    Essential Skills for this role include:

    • Tertiary qualifications in Business Economics Social Impact or relevant field a post graduate qualification in related sector preferred
    • Technical expertise across philanthropic practice and partnerships.
    • Strong budgeting skills a proven ability to manage resources and work toward financial goals.
