Summary
The Assistant Department Manager Building Official supports the department manager in overseeing building code compliance permit processing inspections and enforcement of construction regulations. This role involves supervising staff ensuring adherence to local state and federal building codes and collaborating with stakeholders to maintain safety and quality standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Assist in managing daily operations of the building department ensuring efficiency and compliance
    • Supervise and support inspectors plan reviewers and administrative staff
    • Review and interpret building plans permits and inspection reports for compliance with regulations
    • Ensure adherence to building codes zoning laws and safety standards
    • Conduct site visits inspections and enforcement actions when necessary
    • Assist in resolving disputes related to code violations and permit applications
    • Provide guidance to contractors developers and the public on regulatory requirements
    • Oversee training and professional development for department staff
    • Maintain records reports and documentation in compliance with legal requirements
    • Assist in budget planning and resource allocation for department operations
    • Stay updated on changes in building codes laws and best practices
    • Represent the department in meetings with government agencies stakeholders and the public
    • Travel to various job sites at locations both locally and throughout the State of Florida
    • Regular attendance is required
    • Follows safety procedures
    • Other duties may be assigned

Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering Architecture Construction Management or a related field
    • 5 years of experience in building inspections code enforcement or construction management
    • Certified Building Official (CBO) or equivalent certification
    • Strong knowledge of IBC IRC NFPA and other relevant building codes and regulations
    • Experience in reviewing plans permits and inspection processes
    • Excellent leadership and supervisory skills
    • Strong problemsolving and conflictresolution abilities
    • Proficiency in permit management and reporting software
    • Ability to communicate effectively with contractors government agencies and the public

Preferred Qualifications:

    • Masters degree in a relevant field
    • Additional certifications such as ICC Plan Reviewer Fire Code Official or Energy Code Specialist
    • Mechanical Electrical and Plumbing License
    • State of Florida Plan Review Certification (PX)
    • State of Florida P.E. or Architect License
    • Experience in municipal government or regulatory agency roles
    • Familiarity with GIS and electronic permit processing systems

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

    • Required to drive stand walk use hands to type handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; talk and hear. Body motions and movements include bending twisting reaching stooping pulling kneeling lifting carrying and pushing with or without reasonable accommodation
    • Lifting and/or moving up to thirtyfive pounds regularly is expected on occasion with or without reasonable accommodation
    • On average the workdays range from seven to twelve hours
    • Job site conditions may or may not be accessible by vehicle including wetlands swamps grasslands and fields with uneven surfaces sand brush and other natural and manmade obstacles
    • This job is primarily and regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and construction sites where the noise level is usually moderate to loud
    • This is not a remote position. This role will be based on the selected job posting location.
