About the role:
To provide clinical services including inpatient consulting outpatient services specialist expertise in the management of surgical oncology general surgery and trauma surgery patients. A specific interest in oesophagogastric surgery is desirable.

Position Requirements:

  • Provision of clinical services to patients designated as under your direct care to outpatients and to patients you are asked to consult in Surgical Oncology General Surgery and Trauma Surgery;

  • Provision of two half day elective operating sessions per month primarily to public patients noting that the number of allocated sessions available may vary over time depending upon resources available strategic priorities and clinical demand;

  • Management of elective waiting lists to ensure the numbers of elective waiting list patients do not exceed the National and State waiting time benchmarks or exceed the capacity of the contractually agreed theatre time availability to undertake the wait list cases in accordance with NSW Health Policy

  • Have completed at least two years of postfellowship subspecialty training program in Upper GI Surgery.

  • Experience and recent practice in emergency and acute care general surgery

  • Possess or enrolled in a higher degree in Medicine Surgery or a related discipline.

  • Participate in teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and postgraduate students Junior Medical Officers Basic Surgical Trainees General Surgery SET trainees and Cunningham Upper GI Fellows.

  • Promotion of good patient care and the good reputation of the department and the hospital;

  • Participate in the General and Trauma Surgery oncall schedules.

  • To have successfully completed the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Definitive Surgery for Trauma Course or equivalent or to undertake to complete this course within the first two years of their appointment.

  • Participate in the Departments multidisciplinary team meetings and present all relevant patients at these meetings.

  • Participate in all peer review patient safety and quality improvement activities of the Department of General Surgery including regular morbidity and mortality meetings and participation in the New South Wales Collaborating Hospitals Audit of Surgical Mortality (CHASM) program.

  • Ongoing involvement in research in the area of Upper GI Surgery.

Selection Criteria:

Personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to the Philosophy Mission and Values of Mary Aikenhead Ministries and St Vincents Health Australia

Possess or be eligible to possess specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia and obtain a provider number from Medicare to practice

Possess Fellowship of Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) based on Specialist training in General Surgery as provided for in the Health Insurance Act 1997.

Experience and expertise in clinical practice in Upper GI Surgery in a teaching hospital environment.

Experience in upper GI cancer and bariatric surgery

Interest in hernia surgery and the development of a hernia registry

Completion of at least 2 years postfellowship training in Upper GI surgery preferably at highvolume tertiary referral institution.

Experience and recent practice in emergency and acute care general surgery

Successful completion of a higher degree in Medicine Surgery or a related discipline or enrolled in a higher degree.

Prior experience in clinical or basic science research in Upper GI Surgery leading to publication in peer reviewed literature.

Successfully completion of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Definitive Surgery for Trauma Course or equivalent.

Demonstrated leadership skills that support and foster innovation to create a learning culture with proven ability to improve the quality of services and patient care outcomes

Demonstrated ability to provide high quality compassionate medical care as evidenced by recent practice experience in working congenially and collaboratively as both a leader and member of a multidisciplinary team and as a provider of services that engender high levels of patient satisfaction and experience

Demonstrated ongoing contribution to the development dissemination and translation of new knowledge and practices commensurate with work in an academic teaching hospital environment
