Job Description
The Deputy in Training will be sponsored by the Hernando County Sheriffs Officein a full time FUTURElaw enforcement academy. Following successful completion of academy and passing the State Exam for Law Enforcement the Deputy in Training will be promoted to a Deputy Sheriff.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS:
Under the direct supervision of the Division Commander or designee performs a variety of limited administrative informational investigative and traffic related tasks. This is a paraprofessional civilian position designed to relieve sworn law enforcement personnel from certain designated calls and functions. Employees of this class may be assigned to work in a variety of organizational components such as Patrol Court Security Crime Prevention orTraffic. The Deputy in Training functions as a specially trained quasilaw enforcement officer performing services that do not require law enforcement or regulatory authority. Work is reviewed through conferences activity reports written reports inspections and observations of results obtained. Performs duties as assigned.This position requires a Deputy in Training be eligible fora certified law enforcement position within two years of employment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Works an assigned shift at a designated location of the Sheriffs Office. Assists walkin citizens with various cases and information. Prepares necessary paperwork for a variety of incidents. Answers telephone to give assistance and/or routing to the proper station. Inspects vehicles cited for faulty equipment and prepares VIN and Odometer Verification forms.
- Responds to nonemergency calls for service (i.e. recovered/lost property abandoned vehicles citizen assistance etc.; writes all necessary reports and followups as required. Investigates minor traffic accidents directs traffic at accident scenes and assists in the regulation of traffic during special events. Answers subpoenas and testifies in court when necessary. Issues parking and water restriction violation warnings.
- Operates metal detector for concealed weapons or explosive devices in a courtroom.
- Performs various other law enforcement duties of a noncriminal nature as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Training and Experience
- High school diploma or GED.
- Possession of a valid State of Florida driver license.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the state statutes law ordinances and regulations effective in the county.
- Knowledge of laws of arrest search and seizure search warrants and the rules for handling evidentiary matters and/or matters of detention and security of prisoners.
- The ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine the proper course of action.
- The ability to obtain information through interviews and observations.
- The ability to cope with situations firmly courteously tactfully and with respect for the rights of others.
- The ability to prepare clear and concise reports.
- The ability to follow and understand oral and written instructions and the ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
- The ability to operate radio equipment the ability to use 10 Codes and adhere to the rules of radio communication.
- The ability to react quickly and calmly under emergency conditions.
- The knowledge of pertinent laws ordinances and codes pertaining to related operations and violations.
- The knowledge of the County and its demographics.
- Some knowledge of the Sheriffs Office Policies and Procedures.
- Ability to communicate clearly.
