Job Description Summary:

This position helps Boulder Parks and Recreation by supporting the Community Building and Outreach team. This position will primarilywork alongsidePark Operations staff to support community events and volunteer projects. The role will provide excellent customer service to both the public and event / project organizers. You will help ensure effective messaging and leadership of Community Outreach work to fulfill the department vision mission and initiatives. You will have the unique opportunity to play a role in supporting our Arts in the Park performance series as well as numerous volunteer projects in Parks and Recreation managed locations across the city.

The Boulder Parks and Recreation Community Outreach and Events Assistant position offers a fastpaced outdoor environment to serve the community by promoting community wellness inspired activation. You will work closely with many of the communitys event producers artists and performing arts organizations. You will work closely with many city staff on exciting projects for the beautification and betterment of parks and public spaces. You will be able to work with other community members who share a passion for community engagement.

Job Description:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Coordinates and oversees volunteer groups to ensure ahighqualityexperience for participants and successful completion of designated task.

  • Serve as onsite lead for volunteer groups on day of project.

  • Coordinates schedules permitting and logistical needs for group projects.

  • Coordinates and presents educational talks at projects. Ensures volunteers are trained in safe operation of all tools and equipment to be used on the project.

  • Complete registration and provide context for project prior to work.

  • Work alongside Parks and Recreation staff to ensure project quality safety and timeline standards are met throughout entire projector event.

  • Determine timeframes equipment and materials necessary for projects.

  • Inventory maintain and let staff know how if any tools and equipment need to be ordered to support groups.

  • Maintain written records of work performed including hours worked daily logs database materials costs using project report form.

  • Responsible for picking up snacks/food maintaining equipment and implementing safety trainings to groups.

  • Assist in the developmentoftoolkitsguidelinesandresource documentstobe used by Parks and Recreation staff.

Support Park Operations and Community Outreach staff during community events.

  • Support performance groups including occasional help with setup and teardown of cityowned equipment including but not limited to tables chairs tents temporary event fencing waste receptacles signage and other supplies.

  • Serve as an onsite support staff person in the coordination of performances.

  • Anticipates operational needs and responds to requests and inquiries of performers and contracted suppliers as directed or appropriate.

  • Provide excellent internal and external customer service during performances.

  • Assist in the cleaning and maintenance of the Boulder Bandshell in relation to performance support. Includes but not limited to but not limited to trash/litter removal graffiti/vandalism removal and repair and other minor structure repairs.

Support special event permit holders to ensure safe and successful events in compliance with event policies and park rules.

  • Monitor events during setup and tear down to ensure compliance with City of Boulder special event policies and park rules.

  • Provide excellent internal and external customer service during permitted special events.

  • Make situational decisions based on sound judgment during scheduled shifts.

  • Serves as the onsite liaison for event permit holders.

  • Complete afteraction event reports based on your monitoring and experience.

Help maintain park facilities and properties and perform horticulture maintenance tasks.

  • Assist in the cleaning and maintenance of parks including but not limited to trash/litter removal graffiti/vandalism removal and repair and other minor structure repairs.

  • Maintains and renovates turf areas and general park areas.

  • Performs trash and snow removal.

  • Plans plants and removes annual flower beds and other plantings.

  • Tills fertilizes mulches flower beds and other plantings chip mulches trees shrubs and other plantings.

  • Performs control in turf flower beds and other plantings shrub areas and general park areas.

  • Uses a variety of machinery equipment and tools to accomplish turf andhorticulture tasks.

  • Performs routine maintenance on related machinery equipment and tools.

  • Operate a vehicle or equipment in a safe manner including avoiding the use of a cell phone.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to provide excellent guest service to volunteers event organizers as well as to all visitors to Boulders Parks and Recreation venues.

  • Ability to remain composed in emergency situations and make sound judgment decisions during emergency and nonemergency situations.

  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public and coworkers in stressful situations.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and lead groups. Work with a diverse group of visitors and program participants.

  • Ability and willingness to work entire summer; hours are flexible and include weekends and evenings based on event and volunteer project schedules.

  • Ability to be comfortable with a constantly changing work environment.

  • Ability to demonstrate effective interpersonal skills including conflict resolution skills to help resolve public questions and assist event organizers in ensuring compliance with event permit conditions.

  • Ability to speak/write/understand English.

  • Ability and interest in working with your hands in our parks and garden locations.

  • Valid Drivers License and ability to maintain acceptable motor vehicle record.

  • Have and maintain acceptable background information including criminal conviction history.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working and / or coordinating community events.

  • Experience with venue coordination and rental procedures.

  • Ability to speak Spanish or other foreign language.

  • Experience working with youth groups special populations and volunteers.

  • Experience and education relating to natural resources or environmental stewardship.

  • Experience with horticultural and turf maintenance.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Three 3 years of relevant experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Physical Effort:Ability to stand walk and kneel in the performance of duties.Ability to lift 35lbs.(over 50 lbs. on occasional basis) and carry tools equipment and supplies.Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities that permits the employee to communicate effectively in person.

  • Work Environment: Ability to perform tasks in an outdoor environment under a variety of weather conditions.

  • Machines and Equipment Used:Motorized vehicles hand tools standard office equipment including personal computers telephones utility carts canopy tents barricade and event fencing.
