The peer recovery specialist is responsible to support and enhance the lives of those diagnosed with Mental Illness and Substance Use Disorder by providing empathy hope and support for peers on a mutual journey of recovery. More common in the community based setting. Draws from lived experience in recovery from SUD to make a difference in the lives of others. Postion can be fulltime or parttime.
Communicates daily with staff to identify individuals that need to be seen for evaluation.
Collects required demographic data and insurance information on referred individuals and enters this data into the EHR.
Schedules appointments in the EHR
Gathers clinical information for prescribers prior to the appointments from other treatment providers.
Works with the client to build rapport and engagement in the treatment process. This includes gather information on presenting issue previous history and gather basic vitals.
Reviews the Intake/orientation handbook with individuals prior to receiving services.
Acts as a liaison between prescribers and other treatment team members.
Communications treatment recommendations with the individual and treatment team to understand the plan. Assists with obtaining medications as necessary.
Participates in discharge planning and coordination of warm handoffs.
Provides aftercare support as needed.
Works with clients throughout facility that could benefit from Peer Support services either individually or in a group.
As a peer provides nonjudgmental listening and conveys home for recovery process.
Participates in various ACCMH or GuideLink activities as assigned.
Develops appropriate new skills and accepts new responsibilities as program and community needs evolve.
Attends regular staff meetings and participates in evaluating and planning for services.
Completes assigned educational trainings.
Other duties as assigned.
Personal lived experience in recovery from serious mental illness and/or substance abuse
Two years of previous experience in behavioral health field
Valid Iowa Drivers License clean driving record
Must carry current automobile insurance in accordance with Abbes policies
