Job Title:Knollcrest East OnCall Crisis Response Graduate Assistant
Department:Residence Life
Reports To:Knollcrest East Area Coordinator and Director of Housing & Operations
Status:Part time Oncall: 24hour cycle 7 days a week during Summer Christmas and Spring breaks (may request 2 weekends off and 5 week days off during the Summer break).
12month contract (June 1st May 31st) renewable for up to 3 years.
Remuneration:Housing in RhoTau 2bedroom apartment 15 meals per week (compensation for oncall responsibilities)
Summary
Calvin University has an opening for a parttime Graduate Assistant for oncall crisis response during University breaks (Summer Christmas and Spring) We are seeking a diverse candidate pool of people who possess a commitment to Christian faith.
Preferred qualifications: enrollment in a masters degree program in social work or higher education and/or experience in social work and/or undergraduate study in the field of social work. The position is a 12month parttime oncall livein position. Free housing is provided throughout the year in a townhousestyle apartment on the edge of campus.
Specific job duties:
Summer Spring and Christmas Break OnCall Responsibilities
  • Participate with Residence Life professional staff in oncall duties during University Breaks (Summer Spring and Christmas). Specifically this position will serve oncall 24/7 during the summer break (June 1st August 25th) Christmas break (December 20 January 10 and Spring break (March 714 with certain exclusions for time off (see below). While oncall the graduate assistant will answer the universityowned emergency cell phone and respond to oncampus crisis situations as they arise.Crisis situations primarily involve mental health emergencies (suicidal thoughts anxiety attacks that are not resolving selfharm concerns etc..Other types of crisis may include: medical emergencies disruptive behaviors questions about urgent conduct incidents etc.
  • Provide ongoing support by accompanying students to the emergency room or mental health hospital to support continuity of care advocate for students and/or their families and facilitate releases of information and discharge planning.
  • Transporting students to an area hospital or Pine Rest may be required. (Transportation options include ambulance Uberhealth private car universityowned vehicle or police)Campus Safety officers are also available 24 hours/day 7 days/week to offer inperson support and assist in crisis situations. Phone support from Pine Rest and Calvin directorlevel staff is also available 247.
  • Oncall coverage: While oncall during the breaks must remain within15minutes of campus. This position will be completely offduty during the academic year. During June of the first year of service the graduate assistant will participate in a total of 2025 hours of training related to mental health emergency response and other crisis practices and protocols. Weekly hours will vary based on demand. (Calvin can provide up to 400 hours of work during this 10month contract if needed for social work internship requirements) Time off: During summer break the graduate assistant may request up to 2 weekends off and 5 week days.
  • Supervision: The primary supervisor for this position will be cosupervised by the Knollcrest East Area Coordinator and the Housing Coordinator. A third supervisor will be a licensed Calvin University counselor who has an MSW degree if required for social work internship. Other projects within the counseling office exist if candidate is interested in additional work projects. These are optional and intended to meet the learning goals for social work internships.The KE Apartments are open yearround. During the summer the apartments are open to current Calvin students graduating seniors as well as outside groups scholars and families who are looking for a convenient place to stay in Grand Rapids.

Compensation:
The position is a 12month parttime livein position beginning June 1st. A universityowned apartment near the edge of campus (townhousestyle) will be provided free of charge yearround. This is a 2bedroom 1bathroom apartment with no roommates. There is a private entrance from outside directly into the apartment and the apartment is located on the edge of the upperclass housing area. If the candidate desires to live with roommates an arrangement could possibly be negotiated. If candidate has a spouse or children they are welcome to live in the apartment as well. Calvin also covers costs for all utilities (internet is provided cable is not).
Expected Tenure:
A total term of employment of one to three years (ANNUAL CONTRACTS) is the general expectation of the university for this position. During that period oneyear renewals beyond each contract will be based on the universitys needs and on satisfactory performance of the Knollcrest East Break Housing & OnCall Crisis Response Graduate Assistantjob responsibilities.
