The Department of Population Health Sciences is seeking a vibrant and visionary scientist to lead the Division of Health System Innovation and Research HSIR within the Department of Population Health Sciences. Through Departments research education and community engagement activities we promote patientcentered health care and the delivery of evidencebased health innovations that improve population health and reduce health disparities. Candidates for the HSIR Division Chief should have a: Proven track record of leadership History of innovative and successful investigation Strong appreciation of diverse health service research areas and Commitment to program development team science mentoring across career stages and education. QUALIFICATIONS Candidates should have a track record of successful extramurallyfunded health services research. Experience with integrating research into the healthcare setting is strongly desired. Demonstration of leadership capacity and ability to communicate effectively is essential. The position will entail engagement with individuals across a wide variety of clinical operational and investigative roles. The Division Chief will be charged with continuing to grow and sustain a program of excellence. Applicants for Division Chief are expected to hold a PhD MD or equivalent and to have a proven track record of leadership experience a history of successful mentoring and/or teaching and evidence of an innovative and successful research career with peerreviewed extramural funding. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to collaborate across disciplines and departments and will have considerable strengths in interpersonal communication. LEADERSHIP CAPACITY The Division Chief should: Be an accomplished midcareer to senior health services researcher who excels at interacting with clinicians research methodologists and administrators Have a history of successful engagement in operational partnerships Have a record of forwardthinking leadership needed to help the Division Department and University of Utah Health Care prepare for and lead delivery system reform Have a national/international reputation in health services research Be able to serve as an advocate for the Division as a resource for the mission of the University of Utah Health Sciences Have a demonstrated ability to work effectively with multiple investigators with diverse research expertise and projects and to facilitate others success Have a demonstrated ability to build successful interdisciplinary research teams mentor earlycareer investigators and obtain the committed support of a wide range of institutional stakeholders Take an active role in partnering with the Director of Graduate Studies and Director of Postdoctoral Fellows to support the educational mission of the Department as well as pre and postdoctoral trainees in the Division. RESPONSIBILITIES The Division Chief is responsible for defining the vision of the HSIR Division in collaboration with the Department Chair. The three Division Chiefs within the Department of Population Health Sciences work closely with the Department Chair to develop the overall vision and policies for this relatively new department. The Division Chief will also take a strong mentoring role with faculty. Finally the Division Chief will work with faculty and the directors of graduate studies and postdoctoral fellowships to ensure a successful training experience for postdocs and graduate students. Strategic Planning and Division Growth: To succeed HSIR must maintain its current trajectory in independent and collaborative research. Additionally it is vital that the division continue as a crossinstitutional resource that helps advance the Universitys clinical delivery system and outcomes assessment while building robust interdisciplinary collaboration for research and education. To this end the Division Chief will engage with relevant academic department chairs and division chiefs across University of Utah Health Sciences and will work closely with the University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics UUHC and University of Utah Medical Group UUMG leadership to develop and validate enhanced and innovative approaches to health care delivery and outcomes assessment with the expectation that program goals will be informed by the vision and expertise of the Division Chief. The Division Chief will also: Accelerate the University of Utahs progress toward becoming a premier topranked academic institution in health services research Develop programmatic lines of research such as: implementation science; patientcentered digital health (e.g. apps games decision support interventions) and decision science; pharmacoepidemiology; and comparative effectiveness Expand the Universitys capacity in key methodological areas such as: measurement of patient outcomes; simulation and modeling; and health economic and health policy analysis Recruit new health services researchers to the University of Utah Health Sciences Work collaboratively with other health systems in regional and national programs of research innovation and quality Partner with clinical leadership of University of Utah Health Care Support the development of the University of Utah Healthcare system as a laboratory for advanced innovations in the design of healthcare delivery systems and health systems research Develop shared priorities between academic and clinical stakeholders to focus research activities on outcomes that matter to administrators clinicians academicians patients and society Coordinate with UUHC / UUMG initiatives to understand and improve clinical value Continue to develop and refine HSIRs 1 3 and 5year strategic plan including performance measures Financial Accountability and Sustainability: Maintain a robust portfolio of external funding Develop and submit annual operating budgets and related documents Personnel Management and Development: In collaboration with other departments across Health Sciences support recruitment of new faculty members in health services research and related disciplines across the health sciences Mentor faculty trainees and staff across disciplines and operational units to optimize program performance About the Department of Population Health Sciences The Department of Population Health Sciences had $18M in Research Expenditures in the last fiscal year and is a hub for education investigation and methodological expertise in population health. Through a diverse faculty in three Divisions (Cancer Population Sciences Biostatistics and HSIR we provide expertise and infrastructure to advance capacity for impactdriven research and support clinical professionals in providing better patient and populationoriented care in an increasingly complex healthcare delivery system. Through our research education and community engagement activities we promote patientcentered healthcare and the delivery of evidencebased health innovations that improve population health and reduce health disparities within our community. About the Division of Health System Innovation and Research HSIR currently has 12 tenure/tenure track faculty and 5 research track faculty. Facultys overarching areas of interest include: Health Policy and Health Economics (including the Matheson Center for Health Care Studies) Implementation Science and Health System Improvement Digital Health Patient Centered Care and Decision Science and Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics.
