Department: Upward Bound Program

Title: Mentor/Tutor (Regular Student Worker or Professional Tutor

Location: Long Island City HS SJU campus for meetings etc. This position is available through December 31 2024.

Job Purpose:

  • To provide academic support to underserved students that will increase their academic performance and preparation for postsecondary education

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide academic support to high school students and academic advisement to project participants

  • Assist with outreach and the collection of project services data (i.e. attendance event signin sheets registration forms etc.and with the coordination of educational trips and college visits

  • Attend program activities including educational/cultural field trips family events and college tours

  • Participate in supervision meetings & trainings

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Pursue a bachelors degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0

  • Have a minimum of two years of tutoring experience working with high school or college underserved student populations

  • Demonstrate proficiency in the academic area for which tutoring is provided (Math English and/or Science)

Skills/Requirements:

  • Strong work ethic

  • Attention to detail

  • Solid foundation in at least two content areas i.e. Math English and/or Science)

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Excellent communication (verbal/written) and problemsolving skills

  • Excellent computer skills (i.e. Microsoft Office Excel etc

  • Commitment to supporting positive youth development

  • Bilingual (Spanish) strongly encouraged

Work Schedule:

  • This is a schoolbased program

  • MondayFriday within the hours of 10:00am 4:00pm

  • Some evenings may be for events

  • Schedules will vary based on program needs

Pay rate:

$20hr$25hr
