Department: Upward Bound Program
Title: Mentor/Tutor (Regular Student Worker or Professional Tutor
Location: Long Island City HS SJU campus for meetings etc. This position is available through December 31 2024.
Job Purpose:
To provide academic support to underserved students that will increase their academic performance and preparation for postsecondary education
Job Responsibilities:
Provide academic support to high school students and academic advisement to project participants
Assist with outreach and the collection of project services data (i.e. attendance event signin sheets registration forms etc.and with the coordination of educational trips and college visits
Attend program activities including educational/cultural field trips family events and college tours
Participate in supervision meetings & trainings
Minimum Qualifications:
Pursue a bachelors degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0
Have a minimum of two years of tutoring experience working with high school or college underserved student populations
Demonstrate proficiency in the academic area for which tutoring is provided (Math English and/or Science)
Skills/Requirements:
Strong work ethic
Attention to detail
Solid foundation in at least two content areas i.e. Math English and/or Science)
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Excellent communication (verbal/written) and problemsolving skills
Excellent computer skills (i.e. Microsoft Office Excel etc
Commitment to supporting positive youth development
Bilingual (Spanish) strongly encouraged
Work Schedule:
This is a schoolbased program
MondayFriday within the hours of 10:00am 4:00pm
Some evenings may be for events
Schedules will vary based on program needs
Pay rate:
$20hr$25hr
In compliance with NYCs Pay Transparency Act the hourly salary range for this position is $20$25. St. Johns University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position candidates work experience education/training key skills internal peer equity as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
This position may be relocated to any of St. Johns Universitys physical locations at any time.
