The Diabetes Educator is responsible for the ongoing process of facilitating knowledge skills and ability necessary for prediabetes and diabetes selfcare and the activities that assist the person with diabetes or prediabetes in implementing and sustaining the behaviors needed to manage his or her condition on an ongoing basis beyond or outside of formal selfmanagement training. This process incorporates the needs goals and life experiences of the person with diabetes or prediabetes and is guided by evidencebased standards. Support (whether behavioral educational psychosocial or clinical) helps implement informed decisionmaking selfcare behaviors problemsolving and active collaboration with the health care team and improve clinical outcomes health status and quality of life .
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Licenses and Certifications Required
Applicant must have one of the following:
Current or temporary RN license in ND (or compact RN licensure); or
Licensed as a Registered Dietitian in ND.
Diabetes Care and Education Specialist certification required.
Certification in insulin pump training is required.
Educational Requirements
Education program as evidenced by licensure.
Experience Requirements
Experience acute patient care and chronic disease management is preferred.
Special Skills or Training Requirements
As per 1 above.
15 hours of continuing education annually or maintenance of Diabetes Care and Education Specialist certification from a nationally.
