Job Description

Job Summary
The Department of Surgery at the University of Utah is a nationally ranked academic surgical program that provides highvalue patient care leads in research and innovation and inspires and educates tomorrows leaders in surgery. In addition to providing expert compassionate clinical care our surgeons are engaged in scientific inquiry across a broad range of areas including groundbreaking laboratory research advanced surgical technology and health care system innovations designed to guarantee that all our patients have ready access to personalized compassionate highquality surgical care that consistently responds to their individual needs preferences and values. Chaired by Fiemu Nwariaku MD MBA FACS the Department of Surgery is growing our efforts to work with philanthropic partners to support the excellent work happening in the department. Flexibility: This role has a hybrid (combination of inperson and remote) work environment. The Associate Director of Advancement ADOA will have responsibility for raising funds for the Department of Surgery working with and as directed by the Director of Advancement for Surgery. This important and highly visible position will manage relationships with faculty to establish and execute annual giving efforts for the Department in coordination with U of U Health Advancement Annual Giving and will work with a portfolio of donors who have the capability of making annual leadership major and planned gifts. The ADOA will help grow the Departments major gift pipeline and an emphasis will be placed on major gift fundraising. The ADOA reports to the Director of Advancement for Surgery with input from the Department Chair and Administrative Director of Surgery. The ADOA will effectively collaborate with faculty colleagues and staff both within the Department of Surgery and across campus.

Responsibilities
1. In consultation with the DOA for Surgery and department leadership the ADOA establishes and executes the annual giving/leadership annual giving strategy. Executes an annual giving plan of solicitations for grateful patients and families training alumni friends and others to include email some direct mail digital social media and emerging technologies. 2. In consultation with DOA for Surgery strategically builds and manages a portfolio of leadership annual giving and major gift prospects including grateful patients and families training alumni and others. Works with department faculty to identify and steward grateful patient donors. 3. Solicit major gifts for an impactful multidisciplinary initiative and short and longterm fundraising goals. This includes personal visits preparation of proposals and coordinating the participation of faculty administration leaders and volunteers as needed. 4. Develops a strong working knowledge of the Department of Surgery including initiatives research clinical and operational priorities. Develops strong relationships within Surgery by providing education and training to faculty about the dynamics of grateful patient and major gift fundraising. 5. Communicates routinely and effectively with the DOA for Surgery senior Advancement leadership department leadership and other senior leaders who are actively involved with pending and/or outstanding solicitations with major donors. Submits regular reports as required. 6. Exemplifies university advancements spirit of collaboration by proactively working with annual giving legacy giving advancement services corporate and foundation team Department of Surgery marketing team University of Utah Healths regional engagement program the School of Medicine Alumni Relations team and other university fundraising professionals. 7. The majority of the ADOAs time is focused on gifts from individuals (including family foundations and donor advised funds); however the position also may require interaction with corporation and foundation entities including through University Advancements centralized proposal process. 8. Leads and engages in special event planning including the coordination of virtual and hybrid events. 9. Maintains conduct record keeping (e.g. contact reports) and planning and performace reviews (e.g. annual work plan and fundraising metrics) in accordance with Department of Surgury University Advancement and University policy. 10. Ability to work evening and weekend hours as necessary on short or limited notice. 11. Must have regular and reliable transportation for local travel and be willing to travel when necessary. 12. Frequent local travel expected. Travel beyond local area may be required. Perform other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Business or Public Administration a related area or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required; plus six years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership human relations and effective communication skills also required. Masters degree in Business Administration or related area preferred. This position is not responsible for providing patient care.
