Job Description

Position: Lead Barista

Program: Culinary Arts Liberation Coffee House

Department: Youth Services

Reports to: Manager Caf and Catering

Compensation: $22.00 $23.75 per hour plus $1.75 per hour Shift Differential Premium for hours worked between 6pm6am

Schedule: Flexible

Status: 100 FullTime NonExempt Union

Probation: 90 days

PROGRAM SUMMARY: The Los Angeles LGBT Center Culinary Arts Program reveals the power of food to unite our intergenerational campus while simultaneously helping members to start exciting new careers in the hospitality industry. A certified social enterprise our culinary training program enrolls 100 students a year and produces over 450 daily meals for Center members. We also operate the Centers caf Liberation Coffee House and provide event catering services.

JOB SUMMARY: The Lead Barista provides quality customer service and demonstrates knowledge of coffee products equipment and menu. This position works closely with the Caf Manager to ensure the ontime production of beverages and menu items and helps to support daily operations while being a professional role model to Caf staff. This position is instrumental in building customer relationships and fostering a positive and friendly environment providing technical guidance to new team members and assisting in the training program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Warmly greet to all customers and exemplify exceptional customer service by customizing the guest experience and anticipating needs.

Prepare and serve a variety of drinks such as espresso specialty lattes tea and smoothies.

Work with management to complete and maintain food inventories and ordering and assist with ordering.

Keep equipment in good condition by following proper operating instructions cleaning procedures and preventative maintenance.

Comply with all health and safety codes and follow procedures to ensure proper compliance (cleaning logs temperature logs and corrective sanitation documentation) and maintain safe and healthy work environment by following organization standards and sanitation regulations.

Assist with stewarding to maintain caf cleanliness including cleaning floors walls all beverage equipment and storage/cooler.

Handle pointofsale transactions and processes in accordance with established procedures including operating cash registers accepting cash and credit card payments and register cash drops.

Work to resolve customer feedback and communicate complaints to management.

As part of the Centers social enterprise training program work to maintain a learning environment that encourages employees to ask questions and show respect for fellow team members.

Physical requirements include standing in a stationary position or moving through the caf for the duration of your working shift repetitive manual tasks such as cutting and dishwashing lifting items up to 20 pounds to a height of 4 feet exposure to extreme temperature variations due to hot cooking and dishwashing equipment and cold storage areas.

Participate in staff meetings and other meetings as needed.

Other duties as assigned.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Knowledge of or experience working with the LGBTQ community and familiarity with issues of particular relevance to LGBTQ people and sensitive to the issues of young gay lesbian bisexual transgender and questioning youth.

A passion for the Centers work and its mission to make the world a better place for LGBTQ people.

Food Handlers Permit or be able to pass the exam within 30 days after the date of hire required.

Minimum of 1 year of caf or kitchen supervisor experience formal coffee training a plus.

Background working in a highvolume fast paced institutional facility caf restaurant or hotel a plus.

Excellent communication and time management skills as well as an ability to work with a sense of urgency.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse races ethnicities nationalities sexual orientations gender identities gender expression socioeconomic backgrounds religions ages Englishspeaking abilities immigration status and physical abilities in a multicultural environment.
