Job Description

Fahrenheit Advisors has been retained to assist our client Devon USA in its search for a Controller at its Richmond Virginia office.

Devon USA is a commercial property owner investor and developer with a diverse portfolio across the southeastern and midwestern United States. Since 1980 the company has constructed and/or renovated over 6 million square feet of commercial space and currently manages 2.7 million square feet of warehouse and distribution space. Additionally Devon USA is a majority partner in seven multifamily investments comprising 2000 units and owns significant farmland holdings and other investments.

Position Overview:

Devon USA is seeking an experienced Controller to oversee financial operations including accounting financial reporting cash management payroll administration and compliance. The ideal candidate will bring strong leadership skills deep accounting expertise and the ability to optimize financial processes for a growing real estate portfolio.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Management & Reporting:

  • Manage cash flow bank and brokerage transfers and reconciliations.
  • Oversee accounts payable payroll and intercompany transactions.
  • Prepare and review monthly financial reports journal entries and partner distributions.
  • Supervise accounting staff and ensure financial accuracy.
  • Conduct monthly closings and reconcile multiple accounts.
  • Maintain compliance with tax payments and regulatory filings.

Property & Asset Accounting:

  • Manage rent rolls rent collections and property management accounting.
  • Oversee insurance renewals audits and amortizations.
  • Handle real estate tax payments and tenant reconciliations.
  • Track asset management including depreciation and property additions.

Payroll & Compliance:

  • Approve payroll tax deposits and benefits administration via ADP.
  • Ensure payroll tax compliance and reporting.
  • Administer SIMPLE IRA contributions and yearend payroll processes.

Annual & Strategic Financial Planning:

  • Coordinate with CPAs for tax return preparation and audits.
  • Develop budgets and financial forecasts.
  • Participate in strategic financial reviews and investment planning.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting Finance or a related field; CPA or CMA preferred.
  • 7 years of accounting experience preferably in real estate or property management.
  • Proficiency in Sage 300 Microsoft Excel Quicken and Adobe.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP accounting principles and financial reporting.
  • Experience with payroll tax compliance and insurance audits and a willingness to step in to provide coverage for basic accounting tasks at times.
  • Strong analytical organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple financial tasks and oversee staff.
