This is a projectposition for internalNW Museum of Arts and Culture employees only
This project position is expected to last thru June 30 2025

Schedule: 40 hours a week Tuesdays through Saturdays from 8:30 to 5:00pm. Option for telework 12 days/week after successful completion of sixmonth probationary period.

Who we are:
The Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture (MAC) seeks to engage our audiences in the appreciation of art history and culture of the Inland Northwest and beyond through collection stewardship exhibitions and programs that enrich and inspire. Established in 1916 the MAC is the oldest cultural organization in Spokane Washington and serves over 100000 visitors each year from around the region. The museum collections contain over 63000 objects including the largest known collection of Plateau tribes art and artifacts.

What you will be doing:
You will serve a crucial role in providing broader access to the collections held in the Joel E. Ferris Research Archives at the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture. You will engage with the public and museum employees providing outstanding service and guidance to researchers by phone email or in person by determining the scope of inquiry and identifying resources available. You will also be assisting the Curator of Archives and Special Collections in processing and digitization projects collection record cataloging and serves as an important link in connecting researchers to archival collections.

Duties

Some of what youll enjoy doing includes:

  • Independently work to digitize inventory and record metadata for unprocessed archival photographic materials
  • Converts nitrate negative images to digital files
  • Assist the Curator of Special Collections in the identification of cellulose nitrate negatives and their level of deterioration

Qualifications

Work setting: Indoor archival environment. Handles silver nitrate negatives for digitization with the use of nitrile gloves and safety goggles exposure limited to four hours or less with frequent breaks in a wellventilated space.


REQUIRED:

A bachelors degree in library/information sciences museum studies history public history anthropology or related field

OR

Any combination of education/relevant experience totaling four 4 years


AND

  • Ability to move or transfer boxes and materials weighing up to 40 pounds on a regular basis.

  • Highly organized with attention to detail for tracking documenting and reporting information and statistics
  • Tolerance for working around dust and dirt
  • Ability to work well in a team as well as independently
  • Able to learn and understand the language and concepts of DEI culture and commit to being a part of creating and maintaining a diverse equitable respectful and inclusive workplace

PREFERRED:

  • Previous experience digitizing photographic collections in an archive or library setting
  • Knowledge of library or archives functions practices and procedures with past experience cataloging in DACs and ISAD(G)
  • Experience processing archival collections through arrangement and description procedures
  • Experience handling photographic negatives and photography equipment
  • Ability to understand complex organizational hierarchies and records management best practices
  • Experience editing and managing digital images through Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom.
  • Ability to think outside the box creatively find solutions and research a variety of subject matter
