:59 PMCBC News is looking for an exceptional editorial leader with sharp programming skills an audience growth mindset and staff development drive to lead the Morning Live team at CBC News Network Canadas top allnews awardwinning channel and livestream.
As executive producer you support a team of more than 40 people to drive breaking live and specials programming to broadcast and streaming channels with tight and frequent deadlines. Morning Live is Canadas number one morning news programme. It launches NNs programming day with a strong mix of urgency and personality.
Youre experienced in conceiving planning shaping and vetting visual journalism. You bring a deep understanding of visual storytelling including onscreen presentation; live production; and ondemand streams. Your curiosity and creativity encourages experimentation including with different live and breaking formats to engage with audiences shifting viewing habits. You rely on data and research to inform your decisions.
In this role you are the first stop for the team around legal issues and questions involving the CBCs Journalistic Standards and Practices ensuring your team is providing fair balanced accurate thoughtful and immediate coverage.
You know how to build a respectful newsroom culture where people are motivated to support each other in delivering relevant content that resonates with Canadians meets the CBC News strategy to grow new audiences and fulfills the CBC News Network mission of breaking and live.

Youre a partner with colleagues across the CBC News division sharing both content and expertise across platforms and programs in support of CBCs goals and to help to leverage the CBC News brand.
While editorial excellence is an important focus of this job it also requires exceptional leadership skills. Working with the Managing Editor of CBC News Network you guide and support your producers as they help grow and develop staff regardless of tenure. You provide regular feedback to team members including producers hosts writers editorial assistants and technical staff. You schedule your teams and handle their timecards and paperwork. You care for the physical and mental wellbeing of your team and coordinate support with the Managing Editor as required.
Core Responsibilities:
Drive editorial to determine story priorities develop innovative content strategies and guide teams through live breaking and ongoing news stories.
Respond and coordinate coverage of major events/breaking news often in partnership with CBC colleagues or freelancers at the local national and international level and in a live environment.
Oversees assignment of writing researching gathering editing vetting and distribution of content against CBC News editorial strategy.
Provides strong direction through the day to the show team on expectations around story coverage including length deadlines updates treatments and valueadded material ensuring close collaboration between news units.
Monitors content across CBC News platforms to ensure breadth of coverage variety of innovative treatments and quality of work.
Plans selects and requests the financial and production/resource requirements needed for daily news coverage. During program preparation production and postproduction is responsible and accountable for exercising budget authority.
Ensure teams are meeting audience needs and that they have the tools to support this work.
Ensure compliance with the CBCs Journalistic Standards and Practices including editorial signoff on sensitive or complex stories.
Coordinate problemsolve and drive strategy with team.
Interpret data and competitive analysis to develop editorial strategies to build trust in the CBC News brand and to retain and grow audience on CBC NN.
Answer Ombudsman complaints and manage external and internal editorial issues in collaboration with the Managing Editor.
In partnership with the Managing Editor responsible for staffing and hiring decisions; staff development; training; performance management; feedback; schedules and outreach for the program team.
What you bring to the role:

Experience in leading in a deadlinedriven news environment.
Ability to direct coverage in a breaking news and live environment.
Experience in live programming and content including production planning and resource coordination.
Ability to identify and execute relevant audiencefocused stories which reflect issues being discussed by the general public.
A track record of creativity and experimentation with different video formats and story treatments.
Exceptional critical thinking including problem solving crisis management and editorial judgment.
Thoughtfulness around serving audiences which is the core purpose of public broadcasting.
Demonstrated professional experience with various news platforms including streaming digital social television.
Superior coaching and mentoring skills with both developing and veteran journalists.
Superior knowledge of Canadian (national and regional) politics world events geography and history.
Ability to forge positive team relationships where you value collaboration transparency respect and inclusiveness.
Ability to manage multiple competing and changing priorities.
Ability to lead transformative change in a team environment.
Strong communication organizational and interpersonal skills.
Ability to give and receive constructive effective feedback.
Demonstrated skills managing conflict and having difficult conversations.
Strong understanding of industry trends and their impact on CBC News.
Minimum five years of previous related leadership experience in a multiplatform newsroom or an environment with transferable skills.
A university degree or college diploma in journalism video production or related fields is preferred.
Operational requirements:
This is a fulltime permanent position and you must be able to work onsite in the CBC Toronto Broadcast Centre.
You will be expected to work overtime including early mornings evenings and weekends if news is breaking.
You will be required to assign and create project plans within a defined budget.
Familiarity with technology including iNews Avid Media Central Ross Overdrive and Google tools for content creation distribution and planning.
