Job Description:

Reporting to the Dean School of Advanced Technology the Academic Chair is responsible for providing academic leadership in the management and administration of faculty support staff and students in the Mechanical & Transportation Technology department and establishing a strategic direction for the Department that is aligned with the School of Advanced Technologys Business Plan and Colleges Academic and Strategic plans.

The Academic Chair is accountable for the planning development delivery quality assurance and financial viability of the Departments fulltime postsecondary programs. The incumbent provides broad academic leadership in curriculum development design and evaluation applied research and experiential learning to meet the needs of a diverse student population. The incumbent has knowledge of and experience in the delivery of classroom and online curriculum using a wide range of technologies.

The incumbent is responsible for managing a large staff that includes faculty administrative support and lab technology support personnel. Responsibilities include people development and mentoring with the objective of both supporting staff career goals and enhancing student experience.

The incumbent is responsible for ensuring that the program offerings are responsive and relevant to the needs of the students employers and the community at large developing and implementing new initiatives as required to reflect changing technology economic and market influences and employment opportunities.

The incumbent will work closely with College and external partners to facilitate the development and implementation of new academic programs. This includes gaining an understanding of industry stakeholder requirements to reflect new and changing curriculum economic and market influences and employment opportunities in accordance with current business/industry standards as well as College and Ministry guidelines.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Masters degree in a related discipline engineering or education;

  • Bachelors degree in engineering; Mechanical Engineering or related discipline is preferred;

  • A Professional Engineers licence (P.Eng. from a Canadian jurisdiction is required. Candidates who can demonstrate they have begun the process to obtain their license will be considered;

  • Minimum nine 9 years of relevant experience with increasingly responsible roles. This must include a minimum of two 2 years in a leadership and/or supervisory role;

  • Demonstrated management style that nurtures individual initiative and creativity within the context of organizational goals;

  • Demonstrated ability to engage the external community and develop partnership linkages;

  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to negotiate to use good judgment and to resolve conflicts;

  • Excellent group facilitation and conflict resolution skills

  • Demonstrated planning organizational and time management skills;

  • Proven ability to analyze situations make independent decisions and follow up;

  • Proven ability to function under stressful and demanding situations;

  • Experience working in an adult education;

  • Demonstrated understanding and commitment to student success teaching excellence quality education and applied research preferably within an applied post secondary environment.

  • Demonstrates a sound understanding of exemplary adult education practices including skills and knowledge articulated within the Colleges Professor of the 21st Century.

Other Assets

  • Knowledge of curriculum requirements for certificate diploma and degree level programs;

  • Knowledge of and/or experience with the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) requirements for engineering degrees in Canada;

  • Academic program development experience including project management skills; Understanding of a unionized environment
