Job Description

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water managing wastewater and stormwater and reducing air noise and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country with nearly 6000 employees. DEPs water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the systems 2000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.

The Bureau of Water Supply (BWS) seeks to hire a Watershed Maintainer for the Management Services and Budget (MS&B) Directorate located in Valhalla New York. The Watershed Maintainer under supervision of Chief of Facility Management will perform building maintenance and administrative duties at Sutton Park 465 Columbus Avenue Valhalla NY.
Specific duties include:

Routine Housekeeping; supplement to the contractual janitorial cleaning services. Emptying Trash vacuuming moping wiping down tables cleaning restrooms replenishing paper supplies in kitchens/restrooms

Grounds Keeping; utilizing power equipment as required. Snow Removal Sanding & Salting of sidewalks around vehicles paths etc. Picking up garbage/debris

Facility Tasks Maintenance and Repair; General building maintenance i.e. replacing light bulbs painting and patching of walls hanging pictures repairing wood furniture installing shelving etc

Miscellaneous tasks required for the daytoday operations of the facility. Tasks include but are not limited to: Setting up/tearing down of training rooms restocking of supplies (office & janitorial) inspecting fire extinguishers accepting and distribution of deliveries inventory of maintenance and janitorial supplies delivery of bulk mail to post office etc.

Performing administrative duties as needed assisting with the daytoday operations of the Sutton Park facility maintaining copiers and printers assisting with stockroom and inventory control. Transporting mail and other required materials to and from various facilities throughout the watershed including Lefrak.

Assisting with Fleet maintenance transporting vehicles to shops or vendors for repairs. Assisting staff with vehicle issues as they may arise.


License Requirement

A Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.

Some of the physical activities performed by Watershed Maintainers and environmental conditions experienced are: lifting objects up to waist height; fingering grasping squeezing and/or turning objects such as tools and equipment; pushing and pulling objects such as tools and levers using one or two hands; reaching at a distance up to arms length; coordinating the movements of hands and feet; and balancing body on foot stools or ladders from 3 to 30 feet in height while standing and working with hands overhead. In order to perform the essential tasks of this position Watershed Maintainers may be required to: wear protective equipment such as gloves boots goggles earplugs noise attenuators face shields and/or respirators; work in temperatures ranging from 0 F and 105 F in wetness and varying atmospheric conditions such as high and low humidity; work in the presence of toxic and/or corrosive chemicals and moving parts of machinery and equipment; and work in restricted spaces for up to 1 hour at a time and on surfaces made of metal gratings macadam and/or cement.
Special Working Conditions: Watershed Maintainers may be required to work shifts including nights Saturdays Sundays and holidays.


Preferred Skills:

A Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite including Word Excel and Outlook

Experience in Facility Operations

Experience in Facility Maintenance

Experience in Administrative duties

Mechanical ability

Ability to navigate CityTime; a timekeeping application

Ability to perform physically taxing work

Ability to follow instructions

Ability to lift heavy parts tools and equipment while performing maintenance.


Hours/Shift:

40 Hours per week / May be required to work shifts including nights Saturdays Sundays and holidays.

Qualifications :

A fouryear high school diploma or its educational equivalent and one of the following:

1. One year of fulltime satisfactory experience in the operation and maintenance of equipment used in the controlling or purification of water at facilities in watershed areas reservoirs or aqueduct systems or performing duties involving the upkeep inspection maintenance or operation of watershed areas and related facilities; or

A fouryear high school diploma or its educational equivalent and one of the following:

2. Two years of fulltime satisfactory experience as: a mechanic journeyman or helper in the electrical trades or mechanical trades; or a technician in a chemical processing facility or chemical laboratory.

Driver License Requirement: By the time you are appointed to this position you must have a motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of your employment.
