Job Description

General Overview of Position

The Kenosha Water Utility (KWU) provides municipal water and wastewater services to nearly 110000 people in the greater Kenosha metropolitan area of southeastern Wisconsin which is ideally located on Lake Michigan between Milwaukee and Chicago. Appointment to this position requires satisfactory completion of a 6-month probationary period to acquire permanent employment status.*

This recruitment is for a full-time position within the Kenosha Water Utility and is open to all individuals who meet the minimum requirements. APPLICANTS SHOULD NOTE THAT THE STARTING PAY FOR THIS POSITION WILL BE WITHIN THE PAY RANGE ADVERTISED ABOVE which is Steps 1-4 of our 17-step compensation plan(unless the selected candidate is currently employed in a full-time position with KWU or the City of Kenosha). GENERAL OVERVIEW OF THIS POSITION
Under the general supervision of the Meter Services Supervisor the Water Meter Maintainer performs all phases of water meter service work including the installation repair testing and meter reading of residential commercial and industrial water meters; and performs other related work as required. Work is reviewed for conformance with written work orders and oral instructions and adherence to department procedures policies and safety rules.

The current weekly work schedule for this position is: Monday/Wednesday/Friday - 7:00AM to 3:30PM; Tuesday/Thursday - 8:00AM to 4:30PM. Incumbents are also required to participate in Saturday appointment rotation and may be required to assist with after-hour emergencies.

* The incumbent is required to attend the 40-hour Cross Connection Control & Backflow Preventiontraining and successfully pass the examination to obtain registration as a Cross Connection Control Tester during probation or within a period of time designated by KWU management. This certification/licensing must be maintained during employment which requires completion of continuing education classes. Required Education Training and Experience:


Required Knowledge Abilities and Skills:
  • General knowledge of the operations policies and procedures of the Business Services and Water Distribution Divisions of the Kenosha Water Utility.
  • Some knowledge of the construction installation and operation of water meters and outside registers.
  • Some knowledge of the water meter reading process.
  • Basic knowledge of residential and commercial plumbing systems.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the work.
  • Knowledge of the local geography of Kenosha.
  • Skill and ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Basic computer knowledge and the ability to access records and enter/extract information.
  • Ability to operate non-commercial automotive vehicle.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to accurately complete required reports.
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with fellow employees customers and the general public.
  • Ability to handle reasonably necessary stress.

Physical Requirements:
  • Job tasks require regular and prolonged bending stooping squatting and kneeling while working.
  • Job tasks require working in confined spaces for example meter pits and crawl spaces.
  • Job tasks require regular extensive and prolonged walking over rough and uneven surfaces.
  • Job tasks require getting in and out of vehicles multiple times throughout the work day.
  • Job tasks require lifting and carrying items of moderately heavy (20-50 pounds) and occasional moving items over 50 pounds of weight with assistance.
  • Job tasks require eye-hand coordination strength and manipulative abilities in the operation of hand and power tools computerized handheld machine and office computer.

Environmental Requirements:
  • Job tasks are performed within residential commercial and industrial properties meter pits and outdoors. Such tasks may exposure the employee to adverse environmental conditions which include: extreme temperature/weather conditions odors toxic agents noise vibrations wetness machinery electrical currents traffic hazards and/or dust.
