As a Senior Payroll Clerk VI you will review and processes payroll and all payrollrelated forms for completeness and accuracy. A successful candidate with strong Canadian payroll experience will manage endtoend payroll processes and collaborate with internal teams to maintain smooth payroll operations.
Note: This position qualifies for an optional hybrid work schedule after 90 days of onsite work and onboarding. Employee will be subject to the terms of the Flexible Work Policy Agreement.
What youll do
- Reviews and processes payroll and all payrollrelated forms for completeness and accuracy. (Timecards ROE record of leave benefits etc. in accordance with government statutes collective agreements and benefit contracts.
- Ensures timecard data is accurately entered into the payroll system.
- Processes layoffs and follows payroll procedures for terminated employees.
- Contacts operations supervisors for any missed timecards or discrepancies with timecards.
- Reviews and processes all special payments (terminations wage increments retroactive pay etc. as required and in accordance with current CRA rules.
- Compiles and accurately processes payroll data such as garnishments vacation time union dues benefits insurance and other deductions.
- Ensures all deductions are made as scheduled and in accordance with relevant collective agreements.
- Creates and runs required internal management reports from the payroll system.
- Calculates prepares and reports statutory remittances and voluntary payroll deductions in a timely manner and balance to the General Ledger.
- Responsible for paystub sealing and distribution.
- Prepares payroll distribution expense benefit and other journal entries and reconcile related payroll general ledger accounts.
- Assists in the reconciliation creation and timely distribution of T4s/T4As.
- Maintains an accurate set of confidential employee files by sorting and filing copies (electronic or hard copy) of documents after each pay run in accordance with the companys records retention policy.
- Responds to employee union benefit carriers and government agencies regarding payroll inquiries.
- Responsible for preparing timecards for upcoming pay period.
- Assists other payroll clerks for vacation relief or during peak periods.
- Performs other administrative duties such as mail switchboard filing etc. as requested.
- Trains Payroll back up and reviews the work during the training process.
- Provides training to other Payroll Clerks as required.
- Provides backup relief to cover other payrolls.
- Participates in required meetings providing input.
- Participates and assists in implementation of new systems as required.
- Performs other payroll and accounting related duties as assigned.
- Prepares ad hoc reports as requested.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
What youll bring
- Completion of Grade 12 education plus completion of Canadian Payroll Associations Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) Certification or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum 3 years payroll experience utilizing a computerized payroll program (preferably JD Edwards in a large multiunion environment).
- Experience with JD Edwardss system an asset.
- Knowledge of the methods practices and procedures employed in the preparation and processing of payrolls.
- Intermediate level computer skills with ability to work with computer applications such as wordprocessing spreadsheet and database software in a Windows environment.
- Understanding of operational interdependence between Human Resources and Payroll is an asset.
- Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with various groups in writing in person and on the telephone.
- Ability to maintain sustained attention to detail with high level of accuracy.
- Ability to cooperate and communicate confidentially and to maintain and control confidential payroll information and records.
- Ability to multitask and meet deadlines while dealing with frequent interruptions.
- Ability to make decisions and work with limited supervision.
- Ability to exercise initiative and contribute ideas to improving departmental operations and service to employees.
- Ability to work effectively as a team with good interpersonal skills.
- Ability to interpret and apply Union government agency and departmental policies procedures and guidelines.
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy.

Pay: Starts at $5475/month (rate increases to $5959/month after the probation period)
This is a unionized position and pay rate for this position are set out in the applicable collective bargaining agreement. The rate stated above is the starting rate for this position. It increases after the probationary period and continues to progress over the course of 12 months as per the collective agreement.
