Position Description
The IDEAL School of Manhattan currently seeks a highenergy passionate educator to work as a Transition Support Professional for postsecondary individuals (ages 1821) with varying abilities in an inclusive and community setting.
In this role the Transition Associate will be supervised by the Head of Next Steps and work directly with one assigned student to provide meaningful support in both community and academic settings. This candidate will support the student in increasing their independence across academic social vocational and community travelbased settings.
This ideal candidate will have a strong ability to collaborate with teachers administration and families as well as communicate effectively with potential internship hosts at work sites. In addition this person will work with a team to create individual goals for those in the transition program. Experience working with High School students and/or young adults experience working with individuals with disabilities and the ability to implement creative support strategies are essential. Some Next Steps students with physical disabilities may require assistance in toileting and feeding. The applicant should be comfortable with this should it be required. This person must be comfortable supporting students in wheelchairs in school in the community and on public transportation.
Responsibilities for this job include but are not limited to the following:
Provide direct support supervision and curriculum modification for an assigned 1:1 student throughout the day
Oversee promote and monitor the safety of your assigned student 1:1 student at all times
Ensure lessons are differentiated to meet the needs of and support the growth and inclusion of your assigned 1:1 student
Provide support with independent living skills including travel with students to access goods and services in the community (local bank grocery store etc.)
Support individuals in travel training and navigating the community including travel to and from vocationalbased internship site
Support student during internship with completing vocational tasks including modifying and modeling tasks as needed
Help individuals integrate vocational skills from a classroom setting into an internship site
Observe and evaluate individuals work to determine progress provide feedback and make suggestions for continued growth
Communicate proactively to serve as a bridge among transition student family internship site and Head of Next Steps
Support student during their leisure time to help identify nonacademic areas of interest
Provide academic support to select students who choose to audit a college course
Bachelors degree in Special Education Secondary Education or a relevant field required
Experience supporting individuals with disabilities
A strong understanding of differentiation
Proven ability to collaborate as a part of a team

Excellent written and verbal communication and organizational skills
Physical Requirements
Ability to physically support sitting and standing of Next Steps student with mobility impairment
Ability to push wheelchair bound student as necessary
