Job Description

Assessment:
  1. Perform standard assessments using basic and complex equipment.
  2. Based on assessments identify patient care priorities.
  3. Reassess patient status/needs at appropriate intervals.
  4. Report patient status changes/needs to appropriate RN or ED physician/treating clinician.

Delivery of Care:
  1. Initiate/maintain IV access lines in ED and other patient areas excluding central lines.
  2. Initiate/maintain intraosseous (IO) access with physician approval.
  3. Perform blood draws and send to lab according to policy.
  4. Removal of IV/IO lines.
  5. Obtain and interpret 12 lead EKG and present to ordering provider.
  6. Recognize and report abnormal cardiac rhythms to treating provider.
  7. Perform Endotracheal intubation as requested by the ED Physician.
  8. Obtain and evaluate FSBG.
  9. Wound dressing application.
  10. Obtain Clean Catch Urine.
  11. Transport patients to other departments or inpatient rooms including Telemetry.
  12. Administer medications as appropriate as ordered by ED physician/treating clinician.
    1. Paramedics will be restricted from administering the following:
      1. Blood or blood products
      2. Heparin
      3. Insulin
      4. Narcotic Drips
      5. PCA/PCEA
      6. Hypertonic Saline
      7. Antithrombotics (i.e. tPA)
      8. Chemotherapy agents
      9. Antibiotics PO or IV
      10. Paralytics
  13. Set up suture sets.
  14. Order entry using RN symptombased order guidelines.
  15. Restocking of supplies as needed.
  16. Other duties as trained and credentialed.

Communication/Documentation:
  1. Maintains confidentiality.
  2. Able to communicate verbally and in writing.
  3. Communicate patient status or needs to RN or ED physician/treating clinician as needed.
  4. Document procedures medications etc. in electronic medical record.
  5. Serve as patient advocate as needed.
  6. Monitor department for cleanliness and safety issues and report as appropriate.

Patient Safety:
  1. Meet standards of job analysis form.
  2. Ensure patient comfort.
  3. Collaborate with Emergency Department Team to expedite care.
  4. Pay attention to patient needs.

Interpersonal:
  1. Interact positively with members of team other departments and services.
  2. Respect patient’s culture lifestyle religion and age when planning or implementing care.
  3. Accept constructive criticism and channels emotional reaction in a positive manner.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
  1. Successful completion of Paramedic level training.
  2. Current New Hampshire licensed Paramedic.
  3. ACLS PALS and BLS Certification.

Experience:
  1. Minimum five years as a practicing prehospital Paramedic.
