Overview
The Study Abroad Counselor plays a crucial role in providing guidance and support to students who are considering or participating in studying abroad programs. This position is vital in assisting students in navigating the complexities of international study opportunities including program selection application processes financial considerations and adapting to new cultural environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Conducting oneonone advising sessions with students to identify their academic and personal goals for studying abroad.
- Assessing students suitability for various study abroad programs based on their academic performance and personal preferences.
- Assisting students in selecting appropriate study abroad programs that align with their academic and personal objectives.
- Providing guidance on the application processes including visa requirements financial aid and programspecific deadlines.
- Offering support in navigating cultural logistical and personal challenges associated with studying abroad.
- Coordinating predeparture orientation sessions to prepare students for their study abroad experiences.
- Collaborating with academic advisors and faculty to ensure students receive appropriate academic credit for their study abroad courses.
- Maintaining accurate and updated records of student interactions program choices and outcomes.
- Participating in recruitment events to promote study abroad opportunities to prospective students.
- Engaging in continuous professional development to stay informed about evolving study abroad programs and industry best practices.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in a related field such as international education counseling or cultural studies.
- Demonstrated experience or understanding of studying or living abroad including knowledge of international academic systems and cultural differences.
- Strong crosscultural communication skills with the ability to engage with students from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
- Exemplary organizational skills and attention to detail especially in managing multiple student cases and program requirements simultaneously.
- Experience in advising or counseling students in an educational setting preferably with a focus on international or experiential education.
- Proven ability to handle and resolve complex student issues with sensitivity and confidentiality.
- Proficiency in using technology and relevant software to track student information program details and communication outreach.
- Knowledge of best practices in risk management health and safety protocols and emergency response procedures related to international student programs.
- Understanding of ethical and legal considerations related to student advising and support services.
- Willingness to occasionally work outside standard office hours and travel domestically or internationally for program promotion and student support.
