Summary of Duties:

The Paralegal for Tax Controversy Services will play a critical role in supporting our Tax Controvery team in resolving tax disputes for clients across various industries in their tax credits and incentive services among others. The ideal candidate will assist in case preparation research and documentation working closely with attorneys and clients to ensure efficient case progression. This role requires a detailoriented professional with a strong understanding of tax laws and excellent organizational skills. This is a Hybrid role at our Houston location.

Reports to: Associate Director Tax Controversy

A Day in the Life (Responsibilities):

  • Assist attorneys in preparing for trials hearings and meetings including gathering and organizing evidence and other key documents.
  • Conduct legal research and draft memoranda on various tax controversy issues to support case strategies.
  • Maintain case files and manage deadlines using case management software to ensure timely filings and communications.
  • Prepare and review legal documents such as pleadings briefs and correspondence ensuring accuracy and compliance with legal standards.
  • Communicate with clients to collect information provide case updates and answer queries under the supervision of attorneys.
  • Liaise with external parties including courts tax authorities and opposing counsel to coordinate case activities.
  • Support the legal team in administrative tasks including time tracking billing and report preparation.
  • Stay informed about changes in tax laws and regulations participating in continuing education opportunities as necessary.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Associates degree in Paralegal Studies or a related field; a Bachelors degree is preferred.
  • Paralegal certification from an ABAapproved program.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a paralegal preferably in tax law or a related practice area.
  • Familiarity with tax laws legal codes court procedures precedents government regulations and the judicial system.
  • Proficient in legal research databases (e.g. Westlaw LexisNexis) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex information clearly and concisely.
  • Excellent organizational skills with a keen attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision.
