SCOPE STATEMENT:A Registered Nurse (RN) for the Family Birthing Center is able to independently assess and evaluate the health status of both labor and neonate patients utilizing objective and subjective data and identifying health care problems. Through the care planning process, the RN collaborates with the patient, family, providers, and others on the healthcare team to establish realistic and measurable short and long term goals; prioritizing needs through planning, and the implementation of all interventions to include patient education and counseling. The RN must maintain safe and effective care throughout the episode of care through the institution of standard procedures that stabilize each patient's condition or through the prevention of serious complications in emergency situations. Each intervention is evaluated and documented to determine the outcome of care and if additional interventions are required to achieve optimal health outcomes. The RN acts as a patient advocate. Other duties may be assigned. ESSENTIAL DUTIES PER AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY 1. Directly provides patient care and monitors the patient's response to labor, delivery and postpartum phases of pregnancy, assisting and education in breastfeeding as needed. 2. Promotes wellness for mother during pregnancy and after delivery through continuous education. 3. Provides education to mother about infant care. 4. Documents all events and education in the patient medical record utilizing computers. 5. Communicates patient's condition verbally and in writing to the physician and the nursing supervisor. 6. Assists other FBC staff in maintaining skills and learning new procedures and equipment. 7. Collaborates with nursery nurse in care of mother / baby couplet. 8. Assists physicians with procedures. 9. Assists nurse manager as requested. 10. Assists staff with emergencies in other nursing units when possible. 11. Maintains a clean, orderly and safe environment for all patients in the FBC unit. 12. Clerical duties as required in the department. 13. Maintains inventory and requisitions supplies as needed. 14. Monitors equipment for proper functioning; arranges for repairs as necessary. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Minimum of an Associate s Degree (ADN) from an accredited nursing program. Minimum of one year in area of specialty or acute care preferred or adequate orientation. LANGUAGE SKILLS Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, excellent language, grammar and spelling skills. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, percentages and decimals. OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES This position may require special skills listed below.Accurate, efficient, key-boarding skills; ability to work under pressure with multiple priorities; highly organized. Must be able to adjust to: 1. Occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries 2. Emergency or crisis situations 3. Be subjected to irregular hours on occasion 4. Handling absentee replacement or high census demands on short notice REASONING ABILITY Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions to assist with resolutions to issues and problems. Must be able to apply a high level of understanding to carry out detailed and involved written or oral instructions. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Maintain current, active license as a Registered Nurse in the State of Colorado. Maintain current BLS certification. If not already certified, must complete certification within 30 days of hire. Maintain current ACLS certification. If not already certified, must complete certification within 60 days of hire. Maintain current Neonatal Resuscitation certification. If not already certified, must complete certification at the next available training date. Maintain current PALS certification. If not already certified, must complete certification within 60 days of hire. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision for reading medical records, monitors and other equipment; color vision to observe patient for changes, color of fluids; peripheral vision to observe surroundings while providing patient care; and ability to adjust focus while looking from patient to other areas. CONFIDENTIALITY Maintains patient, employee, and hospital confidentiality at all times, discussing patient, employee, or hospital business only with appropriate parties who have a bona fide need to know; and communicating only the minimum amount of information necessary with respect to protected health information (PHI) as identified by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).
