Assistant Branch Manager-Hanover Park

The Schaumburg Township DistrictLibrary is looking for anAssistant Branch Managerto join theteam at the Hanover Park Branch. This is a full time, 37.5 hours per week,salaried position that will be required to work various hours including nightsand weekends on a rotating basis based on the needs of the Library.

The salary range for thisposition is $57,155-$71,448; based on skills and qualifications.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the BranchManager, the Assistant Branch Manager assists with the overall operationalmanagement of the branch and provides supervision to assigned employees.

The Assistant Branch Manager isresponsible for assessing and fulfilling the patrons’ need for information ormaterials AND working with employees to provide a high level of service topatrons. This is accomplished by (1) using the resources available in theLibrary; and/or (2) requesting information or materials from or referringpatrons to the appropriate department, services, or outside agency. TheLibrarian is also responsible for weeding and adding to specific areas of thecirculating collection, satisfying public service requirements, branchprograms.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL EMPLOYEES:

  • Ability to learn various job functions, perform them correctly, and understand the necessity in overall library operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES ANDRESPONSBILITIES:

Operations/Management

  • Assists with the daily operations of the Branch, activities including: reference, registration, circulation, information, programming, and computer assistance when assigned or in the absence of the Branch Manager
  • Serve as Person-in-Charge (PIC) in the absence of the Branch Manager
  • Help prepare and maintain work schedule and coverage for the public desk.
  • Keep apprised of changes in technology and test new products and applications, as it applies to the Library.
  • Promote Library materials, services and programs and help coordinate special events at the Branch and Library
  • Give tours, classroom presentations, and conduct programming, as requested.
  • Assists Branch Manager in developing strategic goals, policies, and procedures for the Branch

Public Service

  • Provide regular, public service assistance at the desk.
  • Answer patrons’ general ready-reference inquiries and directional questions about the Library, the Branches, and its services.
  • Provide patrons with accurate information about the resources available at the Central Library; refer patrons to the Central Library.
  • Assess patrons needs effectively and efficiently, either in person, over the telephone, or in writing.
  • Resolve escalating patron conflicts and address concerns as needed
  • Give information, based on a primary source from a reliable authority.
  • Manage and complete special projects, as requested.

Collection

  • Contribute to collection development and maintenance for assigned area(s). Utilize circulation and collection reports as well as general professional and library-specific collection guidelines to shape decisions on weeding, promotion and selection, ensuring collection is diverse, current, relevant, and meets the needs of the community
  • Maintain working knowledge of the Library’s reference tools and materials, the online catalog, and digital resources.
  • Instruct patrons in the use of the Library’s reference tools and materials, the online catalog, and digital resources.
  • Maintain working knowledge of the Library’s circulating collection.
  • Assist with weeding and collection development of the Branch collections.

Community

  • Stay informed about the names of officials, organizations, clubs, businesses, schools, social agencies in the greater Schaumburg Area.
  • Maintain working knowledge of the services and practices of the RAILS Library System.
  • Keep apprised of the offerings of neighboring public and special libraries.
  • Maintain professional involvement in the library science industry.
  • Refine or enhance reference skills by reading professional literature and attending seminars, workshops, and professional meetings.
  • Attend meetings and training as required or requested.
  • Treat all patrons and employees fairly and with an open mind; maintain patron and employee confidentiality.
  • Communicate clearly in either in person, on the telephone, and in writing.
  • Cope with the stress of the job and get along with co-workers.
  • Maintain the ability and patience to understand and to be understood by the Library’s patrons.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervises assigned Branch employees.
  • Hires, trains, evaluates, and disciplines assigned employees
  • Addresses complaints and resolves employee relations concerns, in coordination with the Branch Manager.
  • Conduct performance evaluations

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCEREQUIREMENTS:

  • Masters of Library Science degree (MLS) from an ALA accredited university or school.
  • Minimum five years professional library experience with supervisory experience preferred but not required
  • Working knowledge or word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications is required.
