We are seeking a Microbiologist for a multi-year contract supporting the Parasitic Diseases Branch Laboratory at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention located in Atlanta, GA. Candidates for this position need to be physically located in the metro Atlanta area.
Duties to be performed:
The professional must be able to work independently and provide scientific / technical consulting services as outlined below:
Perform DNA extraction and molecular tests to detect disease specific DNA.
Monitor test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.
Develop a molecular laboratory assay using next generation sequencing to diagnose parasitic diseases.
Design PCR primer sets for use in the detection of parasitic diseases by PCR.
Conduct validations to determine the assay sensitivity, specificity, limit of detection and other relevant assay validation parameters.
Analyze and interpret laboratory data generated.
Perform library preparation for next generation sequencing runs.
Perform next generation sequencing runs.
Analyze next generation sequence data.
Utilize bioinformatics workflows for sequence analysis and record parameters for quality control in the context of diagnostic testing.
Perform routine equipment maintenance to include calibrating instruments and verifying their proper functioning.
Conduct evaluation of laboratory experiments to determine whether data generated are accurate and valid to identify unusual or unexpected results and their probable causes.
Assume responsibility that incoming specimens are processed and managed in the required inventory processes.
Perform general laboratory functions to include checking and recording daily temperature of freezers and media, washing glassware, cleaning of autoclave pans, keeping work surface clean at all times, picking up spills, and properly disposing of laboratory waste.
Prepare buffers and reagents for usage in a laboratory.
Maintain inventory of specimens for analysis by molecular methods.
Maintain data records, specimens inventories, and proper storage of laboratory specimens.
Maintain inventory of supplies, equipment, and specimens.
Assist with the ordering of laboratory supplies and equipment.
Prepare written documents and reports, including QMS-related documents, and provide input on work performed for use in scientific papers and presentations.
Candidate Qualifications:
Bachelor s degree in microbiology or related biological science with 3 years of experience outlined above OR (MS, MA or similar) degree in microbiology or related biological science with 2 years of experience outlined above.
Must have experience in extracting DNA/RNA from complex sample types (e.g., human stool or sputum, soil, plants, mollusk tissue).
Must have experience in performing PCR.
Must have experience in performing next-generation sequencing, preferably Illumina.
Basic understanding of bioinformatic processes to analyze data from next-generation sequencing.
Must have the ability to Validate assays to determine the assay sensitivity, specificity, limit of detection and other relevant assay validation parameters
Knowledge of statistical methods and procedures such as analysis of variance, correlation, regression analysis and frequency distribution.
Other Requirements:
Requires professional knowledge of microbiology/biology sufficient to independently perform recurring, well-precedented projects using standard methods and techniques.
Must have the professional knowledge and skill to perform and monitor the full range of specialized tests and non-routine procedures for which there are standard methods and techniques, to calculate and correlate test results, and to verify results
Must have a working knowledge of regulatory agency policies.
Must have the skill necessary to operate automated pieces of equipment and use the laboratory information system.
Knowledge of oral communication techniques to make presentations, provide program consultation, and respond to inquiries.
Knowledge of written communications to prepare responses for inquiries, reports, proposals, etc.
Knowledge of interpersonal relationship practices to meet and deal with persons of diverse backgrounds.
