We are looking for individuals with food-service-related experience serving large quantities of food, in hospitality kitchens, community food facilities, or related areas to assist a long-term care home. LTC homes need cooks who are empathetic and have a passion for food. Cooking for LTC means you will be helping to make the food our residents eat every day! Reporting to the Food Services Supervisor and Nutrition Manager, the Cook is responsible for performing food preparation and production tasks; and ensuring standards are met in accordance with Ministry of LTC Standards, as well as departmental policies and procedures.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Read, interpret, and prepare standardized recipes and food items as indicated on Menu production sheets for all resident areas
  • Prepare meals and beverages using specific procedures, with knowledge and understanding of food texture modifications
  • Maintain the safe operation of food preparation equipment
  • Ensure proper and safe storage and handling of all food products
  • Accurately record meals served and monitor food temperatures
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary work area by complying with sanitation procedures
  • Participate in menu planning
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor and Management
  • Supervision/guidance of dietary staff in the absence of the FSM*

Requirements

Preferred Skill, knowledge and education
Cooking: 1 year
Long-term care: 1 year
Food Safe, SafeCheck, Food Handler or equivalent
Red Seal or other Cooks Papers
Successful completion of a Chef training or Culinary Management diploma from a vocational or trade school or community college or approved equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge of and ability to operate institutional and job-related foodservice tools and equipment.
  • Experienced in sanitation and food safety procedures
  • Knowledge of the Sanitation Code, Health Protection and Promotions Act, Occupational Health & Safety Act and MOHLTC guidelines as related to food and nutrition service
  • Culinary and/or foodservice experience in a healthcare facility
  • Working with therapeutic menus
  • Familiarity with modified texture diets
