Mechanical Designer

Location: Hartford, Connecticut

Full time direct hire, full benefits

Summary

The primary purpose of this job is to assist in customer-focused prototype and production part projects, which include new product development, improvement of current products, and design modifications required to produce 3D printed metal parts. Provides support with general technical direction and minimum supervision.

Essential Functions:

  • Exercises constant creative thinking in design work and utilizes knowledge of basic engineering principles, equipment, or design practices and current manufacturing methods and procedures.
  • Works directly with Project Engineers by assisting with design, layout, or manufacturability ideas and converting ideas into workable parts.
  • Creates and updates 3D CAD models, 2D drawings and prints, and additive manufacturing build layout computer files to improve manufacturability of parts produced via additive manufacturing/3D printing
  • Designs AM builds to be used for both production and R&D purposes
  • Analyzes job assignments and determines needs in terms of time, design, and other resources required for the completion of assignments.
  • Makes necessary design calculations under guidance using established engineering practices.
  • Able to read and interpret 3D CAD and 2D drawings, including GD&T, inspection and quality requirements, and translate those requirements into updated requirements for internal and external suppliers.
  • Analyzes manufacturing shop floor results and quality reports, recommending changes, redesign, or replacement to solve problems.
  • Ensures that all design work meets customer drawing and specification requirements.
  • Constantly seeks to improve design capabilities through study, reading, observation, and evaluation of relevant metal additive manufacturing and machining technologies.
  • Develops and maintains technical expertise of the Additive Manufacturing process through experimentation, technical literature review, and best practice exchanges across the company
  • Support engineering and R&D in the development, evaluation and standardization of new products and processes
  • Works frequently with manufacturing/shop floor associates, external suppliers, and other ATI engineering teams and all internal departments.
  • Follows necessary steps and processes to maintain revision control, working within a critical/regulated-industry quality system delivering production parts
  • Communicate with machining suppliers as necessary to review part machining requirements, tooling and fixturing determination, and assessment of design features to reduce cost, lead time, or complexity

Basic Requirements

  • Two-year technology degree or bachelor's degree in engineering
  • 2+ years of CAD software (Solidworks, NX, Creo, others) experience in both 2D and 3D (parts and assemblies).
  • 2+ of casting/forging and/or machined part design experience
  • 2-4 years' experience working in a regulated manufacturing environment (aerospace, medical, automotive, or equivalent)

Essential Skills

  • Demonstrated understanding of drawing practices, especially ASME Y14.100
  • Ability to organize design effort and keep orderly documentation
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment
  • Can handle multiple projects simultaneously and shift project assignments with priority revisions.
  • Mechanically inclined, comfortable in a hands-on manufacturing shop floor environment
  • Professional or academic experience with metal additive manufacturing, especially powder bed fusion technologies
