The current position is within theVIB Center for Plant Systems Biology (VIB-PSB, Ghent) unit, focusing on the effect of genome duplication and merging on various biological levels by using the microalgae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii as a model species. Yves Van de Peer s lab is looking to recruit a dynamic and well-organised lab technician to strengthen its experimental team.

The candidate

The position will require that you assist with various laboratory tasks involved in the culturing of microalgae. You will perform and/or help in project-related experiments within the team. Good organization skills are necessary to ensure the handling of simultaneous tasks and experiments within the project. Strong hands-on technical and experimental lab experience is crucial. You will be involved in the management of the lab and you will ensure the smooth functioning of the daily operations. You will be involved in several long-term evolution experiments, which require regular culturing in axenic conditions. Your tasks will involve microbial cell culturing, molecular work (PCR, DNA and RNA extraction, etc.), phenotyping (microscopy and flow cytometry), and placing orders for equipment and products.

Profile

Essential

• Bachelor in Biomedical Laboratory Sciences or equivalent
• Fluency in English
• Solid hands-on technical and experimental lab experience
• Strong background and experience in microbe culturing
• Good communication skills
• Eagerness to learn new techniques, expand knowledge and take on responsibilities.

Desirable but not required

• Experience with molecular biology techniques
• Experience with microalgal culturing
• Experience with flow cytometry
